How to Use the Acres Per Hour Calculator
This acres per hour calculator helps you determine how fast your agricultural equipment covers ground — and how long it will take to finish working a field, lawn, or garden. Whether you're plowing, seeding, mowing, or fertilizing, the tool works the same way.
What You Need to Enter
- Unit system — choose Imperial (US) for feet, miles, and acres, or Metric for meters, kilometers, and hectares.
- Tool effective width — the working width of your mower deck, plow, sprayer boom, or other implement.
- Machine speed — your average operating speed (mph for Imperial, km/h for Metric).
- Overlap (%) — the percentage of each pass that overlaps the previous one. The default is 10%, which is typical for most mowing operations. Set to 0 if your activity requires no overlap (e.g., precise seeding rows).
- Plot area (optional) — enter your field or lawn area to get the estimated time to complete the job.
Formulas Used
Imperial (US) — Acres Per Hour
When tool width is in feet and speed is in mph:
Acres per Hour = (Width ft × Speed mph × 5,280 × (1 − Overlap%/100)) ÷ 43,560
Where 5,280 = feet per mile, and 43,560 = square feet per acre.
Metric — Hectares Per Hour
When tool width is in meters and speed is in km/h:
Hectares per Hour = (Width m × Speed km/h × 1,000 × (1 − Overlap%/100)) ÷ 10,000
Where 1,000 = meters per kilometer, and 10,000 = square meters per hectare.
Time to Complete
Time (hours) = Plot Area ÷ Area per Hour
Unit Conversions Used
- 1 acre = 0.404686 hectares
- 1 hectare = 2.47105 acres
Practical Examples
Example 1 — Lawn Mowing (Imperial)
A riding mower with a 5 ft deck at 4 mph with 10% overlap:
Acres/hr = (5 × 4 × 5,280 × 0.90) ÷ 43,560 ≈ 2.18 acres/hr
For a 1-acre lawn: 1 ÷ 2.18 ≈ 27 minutes.
Example 2 — Field Cultivation (Metric)
A tractor with a 3 m plow at 8 km/h with no overlap:
Ha/hr = (3 × 8 × 1,000 × 1.00) ÷ 10,000 = 2.40 ha/hr
For a 10 ha field: 10 ÷ 2.40 ≈ 4 hours 10 minutes.
About the Overlap Parameter
In practice, operators rarely use 100% of their machine's width on every pass — a small overlap ensures no strips are missed. The standard default of 10% is used for most mowing and spraying work. For precise row-by-row operations such as planting or direct seeding, you can set overlap to 0%.
