Addition Definition in Math — What Is an Addend?

Addition, also called summation, is the process of combining two or more numbers to get a total called the sum. The numbers being added are called addends — in our calculator labeled A, B, C, D, and E. The result is called the sum (C = A + B, or more generally: Sum = A + B + C + …).

Addition is one of the four basic operations of arithmetic, alongside subtraction, multiplication, and division. The symbol of addition is a plus sign (+), placed between the addends.

Properties of Addition

  • Commutativity — the order of addends does not change the result:
    A + B = B + A
  • Associativity — when adding more than two numbers, the grouping does not matter:
    A + (B + C) = (A + B) + C
  • Identity element — adding zero does not change a number:
    A + 0 = A
  • Negative numbers — adding a negative number is the same as subtracting:
    A + (−B) = A − B

Add Numbers — Not So Simple?

Sometimes the numbers are huge, negative, or expressed with units (feet, kilograms, dollars). In all these situations, our addition calculator works smoothly and gives you the right answer instantly. Simply enter your addends, choose a unit system if needed, and click Calculate.

The earliest discovered evidence suggests addition was used between 20,000 and 18,000 years BC. Fortunately, now you don't have to do it manually!

Summation Calculator — How Does It Add Numbers?

It's effortless and intuitive:

  1. Enter the first addend (A).
  2. Enter the second addend (B).
  3. Optionally add up to 3 more addends (C, D, E) using the + Add addend button.
  4. Choose a unit system: plain number, US Imperial, Metric, or Currency.
  5. Click Calculate — the sum appears instantly.

The calculator shows you the full formula A + B = Sum, a step-by-step breakdown for more than two addends, and a complete addends table.

Addition Calculator in Practice

US Imperial Units

Need to total measurements in feet, inches, or pounds? Select US Imperial and pick your unit. The calculator adds the values and displays the result with the correct unit label.

FAQs

Can I add negative numbers?

Yes. Enter a negative value by typing a minus sign before the number (e.g., −25). The calculator handles positive and negative numbers equally. Remember: adding a negative is equivalent to subtraction, A + (−B) = A − B.

Can I add decimals?

Absolutely. The calculator accepts any real number: integers, decimals, and negative values. Results are displayed with full precision, and very large or very small results are also shown in scientific notation.

What is the maximum number of addends?

Our calculator supports up to 5 addends (A through E). Use the + Add addend button to add more fields. For longer lists of numbers, see our Average Calculator.

What are the commutativity and associativity properties?

Commutativity means you can swap any two addends without changing the sum: 3 + 5 = 5 + 3 = 8.
Associativity means the grouping of addends doesn't matter: (2 + 3) + 4 = 2 + (3 + 4) = 9.

What is counting?

When you keep adding +1, that process is called counting. Addition is the mathematical foundation of counting.
