What Is the US Army Body Fat Calculator?

The US Army Body Fat Calculator estimates your body fat percentage using the official tape-measurement method described in Army Regulation 600-9 — The Army Body Composition Program. All active-duty service members and enlistment candidates are required to meet Army body fat percentage (%BF) standards as a condition of military service.

This calculator supports both imperial (inches) and metric (centimeters) measurement systems and works for both men and women.

What Measurements Are Required?

According to AR 600-9, the measuring tape must be made of a non-stretchable material, preferably fiberglass. All circumference measurements should be taken horizontally:

  • Height — Stand up straight without shoes.
  • Neck — Measure the circumference below the larynx (Adam's apple), sloping slightly downward at the front.
  • Waist — For men, measure at navel level. For women, measure at the narrowest part of the abdomen.
  • Hips — For women only. Measure at the widest part of the buttocks or hip.

What Formula Does the Army Body Fat Calculator Use?

The formulas come from Army Regulation 600-9. They are designed to work with values expressed in inches. When metric units are used, centimeters are automatically converted to inches before the calculation.

Formula for Men

%BF = (86.010 × log₁₀(waist − neck)) − (70.041 × log₁₀(height)) + 36.76

Formula for Women

%BF = (163.205 × log₁₀(waist + hip − neck)) − (97.684 × log₁₀(height)) − 78.387

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the same as the Navy body fat calculator?

No. The US Navy and US Army use different formulas. The Army formula uses only waist and neck for men (no abdomen), while the Navy formula uses both abdomen and neck measurements. Results may differ by several percentage points.

How accurate is this method?

The tape-measure method has an accuracy of ±3–4% compared to DEXA scans. It is a standardized field method designed for consistent mass screening rather than precision body composition analysis. This tool is intended for informational purposes and is not a substitute for a professional medical assessment.

What if my body fat exceeds Army standards?

Service members who exceed body fat standards are enrolled in the Army Body Composition Program (ABCP) and are given time to meet the standard. Failure to meet the standard after the program may result in administrative action or separation from service.

Can I use this calculator in centimeters?

Yes. Select "Metric (cm)" in the unit toggle before entering your measurements. The calculator will automatically convert centimeters to inches to apply the official Army formula.
