How to Use the Average Calculator
The average calculator computes the arithmetic mean of up to 50 numbers. As you enter values, the live preview updates instantly — no need to press a button. Once you are ready, click Calculate to save the result, generate a shareable link, and see a full breakdown including median, min, max, range, and standard deviation.
Step-by-Step Guide
- Choose a unit type — select Plain Number, Currency, Imperial, or Metric to add a unit label to your results.
- Pick the specific unit or currency — for Currency choose from 25+ world currencies (USD, EUR, GBP, JPY, RUB, and more); for measurements choose inches, feet, kilograms, liters, °C, °F, etc.
- Enter your numbers — start with the first field. A fifth field appears automatically once you fill the fourth, continuing up to 50 values.
- Watch the live average — the preview above the form updates after every keystroke, so you always see the current mean.
- Click Calculate — get the full statistical breakdown: mean, sum, count, min, max, range, median, and standard deviation, plus a per-value deviation table.
- Share or save — use the Share button to copy a unique link to your calculation.
How to Calculate an Average
The average (arithmetic mean) of a set of numbers is the sum of all values divided by the count of values.
Formula:
Average = (x₁ + x₂ + … + xₙ) ÷ n
Example: Find the average of 24, 55, 17, 87, and 100.
- Sum: 24 + 55 + 17 + 87 + 100 = 283
- Count: 5
- Average: 283 ÷ 5 = 56.6
Measurement Systems Supported

- Weight: ounces (oz), pounds (lb), US tons (ton)
- Volume: fluid ounces (fl oz), pints (pt), quarts (qt), US gallons (gal)
- Temperature: Fahrenheit (°F)
🌍 Metric System (SI)
- Length: millimeters (mm), centimeters (cm), meters (m), kilometers (km)
- Weight: milligrams (mg), grams (g), kilograms (kg), metric tonnes (t)
- Volume: milliliters (mL), liters (L)

Weighted Average — each number is multiplied by a weight before summing, then divided by
the total weight. Common in GPA calculations:
GPA = (grade₁ × credits₁ + grade₂ × credits₂ + …) ÷ total credits
Example: A (4.0) in a 3-credit class + two B's (3.0) in 4-credit classes + C (2.0) in a 2-credit class:
GPA = (4×3 + 3×4 + 3×4 + 2×2) ÷ (3+4+4+2) = 40 ÷ 13 ≈ 3.08 - Median — the middle value when all numbers are sorted. Less sensitive to outliers than the mean. If there is an even number of values, the median is the mean of the two middle values.
- Mode — the value that appears most often. A dataset can have no mode, one mode, or multiple modes.
- Geometric Mean — the n-th root of the product of all values. Useful for growth rates and ratios: GM = (x₁ × x₂ × … × xₙ)^(1/n)
- Harmonic Mean — the reciprocal of the mean of reciprocals. Used in averaging speeds and rates: HM = n ÷ (1/x₁ + 1/x₂ + … + 1/xₙ)
Behind the Scenes of the Average Calculator
When you click Calculate, the calculator:
- Collects all non-empty numeric values (up to 50).
- Computes: sum, count, mean, median, min, max, range, and population standard deviation.
- Builds a per-value deviation table showing how far each number is from the mean (absolute and percentage).
- Saves the result to the database and generates a unique shareable link.
The standard deviation tells you how spread out the values are. A low std dev means the values are clustered near the mean; a high std dev means they are widely spread.
σ = √[ (Σ(xᵢ − x̄)²) ÷ n ]
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
- How many numbers can I average?
- Up to 50 numbers. Fields appear dynamically as you fill in the previous one.
- Can I average negative numbers?
- Yes. Negative numbers, decimals, and very large numbers are all supported.
- What is the difference between mean and average?
- In common usage they are the same. "Mean" usually refers to the arithmetic mean, which is what this calculator computes.
- Does the calculator support decimal numbers?
- Yes. Enter any number with up to 15 significant digits.
- Can I use this for currency averages?
- Yes — select the Currency unit type and pick any of the 25+ supported world currencies. The symbol will be displayed alongside all results.
- What is the standard deviation shown in the results?
- We compute the population standard deviation (dividing by n, not n−1), which is appropriate when your values represent the entire dataset rather than a sample.
