How to Use the Baluster Calculator

Whether you're building a deck, porch railing, or stair balustrade, our baluster calculator takes the guesswork out of ordering materials. Simply enter five measurements and get an instant count of how many spindles you need.

  1. Railing length — the total horizontal distance of the railing run (feet for Imperial, meters for Metric).
  2. Number of posts — include all posts in the run, both end posts and any intermediate posts.
  3. Post width — the cross-section width of a single post (inches or mm). A 4×4 post is typically 3.5 in / 89 mm after milling.
  4. Baluster width — the widest cross-section of a single baluster. For round or tapered spindles, use the widest part.
  5. Baluster spacing — the desired clear gap between adjacent balusters. The maximum permitted gap in most US building codes is 4 inches (99 mm). Check your local regulations — some jurisdictions require less.
  6. Price per baluster (optional) — enter a unit price and select a currency to see the estimated material cost.

The calculator finds the number of balusters that keeps the actual gap at or below your chosen spacing value, then shows the precise gap that results. If the computed gap still exceeds the 4 in / 99 mm limit, a warning is displayed.

Baluster Calculator Formula

The available length (the space balusters actually fill) is:

Available length = Railing length − (Number of posts × Post width)

The number of balusters is then:

N = ⌈(Available length − Spacing) / (Baluster width + Spacing)⌉

And the actual gap between adjacent balusters is:

Actual gap = (Available length − N × Baluster width) / (N + 1)

This ensures that N + 1 equal gaps fit within the available length with N balusters between them.

Worked Example (Imperial)

  • Railing length: 10 ft (120 in)
  • Posts: 2, each 3.5 in wide → removes 7 in total
  • Available: 120 − 7 = 113 in
  • Baluster width: 1.5 in | Desired spacing: 4 in
  • N = ⌈(113 − 4) / (1.5 + 4)⌉ = ⌈19.8⌉ = 20 balusters
  • Actual gap: (113 − 20 × 1.5) / 21 ≈ 3.95 in

Worked Example (Metric)

  • Railing length: 3 m (3000 mm)
  • Posts: 2, each 90 mm wide → removes 180 mm total
  • Available: 3000 − 180 = 2820 mm
  • Baluster width: 38 mm | Desired spacing: 99 mm
  • N = ⌈(2820 − 99) / (38 + 99)⌉ = ⌈19.86⌉ = 20 balusters
  • Actual gap: (2820 − 20 × 38) / 21 ≈ 97.1 mm

How to Save on Home Renovation

Balusters can represent a significant share of your railing project budget. Here are practical ways to keep costs down:

  • Buy in bulk. Most suppliers offer price breaks at 25, 50, and 100+ units. Calculate your exact count first, then round up to the nearest tier.
  • Add a 10–15% buffer. Always purchase a few extra balusters to account for cutting waste, miscuts, or future repairs. The calculator shows you the recommended range automatically.
  • Choose the right material. Pressure-treated pine is the most economical option for exterior use. Composite and aluminum cost more upfront but require less maintenance over time.
  • Maximize spacing. Going from 3.5 in to 4 in spacing (the legal maximum) can reduce your baluster count by 10–15%, with direct savings on materials.
