How Does This Blood Volume Calculator Work?

Blood volume comprises the liquid part (plasma) and the cellular part. The mean value for indexed blood volume (ᵢBV) in normal-weight adults is 70 mL/kg for males and 65 mL/kg for females.

Since ᵢBV decreases in a non-linear manner with increasing weight, these values cannot be used for obese and morbidly obese patients. The methods we provide take into account the entire range of body weights.

Method 1 — Nadler's Equation

An advanced formula to calculate blood volume was originally developed by Dr. Allen in 1956. In 1962, Dr. Nadler published more accurate coefficients in Prediction of blood volume in normal human adults.

For males:
BV = 0.3669 × h³ + 0.03219 × w + 0.6041

For females:
BV = 0.3561 × h³ + 0.03308 × w + 0.1833

Where h is height in meters, w is weight in kilograms, and BV is blood volume in liters.

Nadler's formula can also be used to compute the proper immunoglobulin dose in pregnancy.

Method 2 — Lemmens-Bernstein-Brodsky Equation

In 2006, Dr. Lemmens, Dr. Bernstein, and Dr. Brodsky published an equation that allows physicians to predict indexed blood volume (ᵢBV) over the full spectrum of body weights and BMI values, including obese and morbidly obese patients not stressed by acute trauma or critical illness.

Formula:
ᵢBV = base / √(BMI / 22)

Where base = 70 mL/kg for males, 65 mL/kg for females, and BMI is calculated from weight (kg) and height (m). Total blood volume is then:

BV (mL) = ᵢBV × weight (kg)

This method is especially accurate for patients with BMI significantly above or below the normal range of 18.5–24.9.

Method 3 — Simple Indexed Blood Volume

A straightforward reference calculation using standard indexed values:

  • Males: BV = 70 mL/kg × weight
  • Females: BV = 65 mL/kg × weight

This method works well for normal-weight adults but overestimates blood volume in obese patients (since fat tissue has a lower blood supply per kilogram).

How Does Blood Volume Affect Blood Pressure?

Blood volume is directly related to blood pressure. When blood volume increases (e.g., due to fluid overload or hypervolemia), the heart must pump more blood, raising cardiac output and blood pressure. When blood volume drops (hemorrhage, dehydration), blood pressure falls — potentially leading to hypovolemic shock.

Maintaining adequate blood volume is critical in surgery, trauma care, and critical illness management.
