How Many People Does a Cake Feed?

Wondering how big a cake to order or bake? Our Cake Serving Calculator takes the guesswork out of party planning. Choose the cake shape (round, square, or sheet), enter the number of guests, pick your desired slice size, and we'll tell you exactly what size cake you need — in both inches and centimeters.

Cake Slice Sizes Explained

The number of servings depends heavily on how you cut the cake. We offer three standard slice sizes:

  • Wedding slice — 1" × 2" (about 2.5 × 5 cm) — a small, elegant portion. This is the standard for tiered wedding cakes where many other desserts are served alongside.
  • Party slice — 2" × 2" (about 5 × 5 cm) — the most common everyday serving size for birthdays and celebrations.
  • Generous slice — 2" × 3" (about 5 × 7.5 cm) — a hearty portion for casual parties where cake is the main dessert.

Round Cake Sizes — How Many People Does a Round Cake Feed?

For round cakes, the size listed in inches (or centimeters) refers to the diameter. Here's a quick reference for standard round cake sizes using party-sized slices (2 in²):

  • 6" (15 cm) — about 7 slices
  • 8" (20 cm) — about 12 slices
  • 10" (25 cm) — about 19 slices
  • 12" (30 cm) — about 28 slices
  • 14" (36 cm) — about 38 slices
  • 16" (41 cm) — about 50 slices
  • 18" (46 cm) — about 63 slices

Wedding Cake Serving Charts

Planning a wedding? The calculator automatically suggests a two-tier cake when guest counts are large — typically with tiers 2–3 inches apart in diameter. For example, a wedding for 100 guests with wedding-sized slices can be handled by an 18" single-tier cake, or a two-tier combination of 13" + 11" tiers.

Remember: these are estimations. Cutting a perfectly even 100-slice cake in real life is a challenge, so we recommend ordering slightly more than the minimum calculated amount.

Sheet Cake Sizes — How Many People Does a Sheet Cake Feed?

Sheet cakes come in three standard sizes:

  • Quarter Sheet — 13" × 9" (33 × 23 cm)
  • Half Sheet — 18" × 13" (46 × 33 cm)
  • Full Sheet — 26" × 18" (66 × 46 cm)

The serving count is calculated by dividing the total area by the slice area. A full sheet cake with party slices (4 in²) yields approximately 117 servings: 26 × 18 = 468 in² ÷ 4 in² = 117.

Tips for Ordering or Baking a Cake

  • Order a little extra — cutting errors, crumbled corners, and last-minute guests are common at parties.
  • Consider the cake type — dense cakes like cheesecake or carrot cake are often cut smaller; light sponge cakes can be cut more generously.
  • Factor in cake height — taller cakes (3–4 layers) are richer and more filling, so guests typically eat less per slice.
  • For weddings — use wedding slice size for better budget control; supplement with a sheet cake in the kitchen for additional servings if needed.
