How to Calculate Carpet Cost

Our Carpet Calculator helps you figure out the exact area of your carpet and estimate the total cost — whether you're buying carpet for a rectangular room, a hallway, or a round rug. Simply enter your measurements, an optional price per square foot or square meter, and let the calculator do the rest.

1. Rectangle

For a rectangular carpet, enter the carpet's width and length:

Carpet Area = Width × Length

For example, a 10 ft × 12 ft carpet has an area of 120 sq ft (≈ 13.33 sq yd). If the carpet costs $3.50 per sq ft, the total cost is $420.

2. Circle

For a circular carpet, enter the radius (half of the diameter):

Carpet Area = π × radius²

For example, a circular rug with radius 5 ft has an area of ≈ 78.54 sq ft. At $4.00 per sq ft the total cost is ≈ $314.16.

Measurement Systems

  • US Imperial — enter dimensions in feet (ft). The calculator also shows the area in square yards (sq yd), since carpet is commonly sold by the yard in the US.
  • Metric — enter dimensions in meters (m). Area is shown in square meters (m²).

Multi-Currency Cost Estimation

Enter a price per sq ft (imperial) or per m² (metric) to see the total cost. Choose your preferred currency from 20 world currencies including USD ($), RUB (₽), EUR, GBP, JPY, CAD, AUD, CHF, and more.

A Note on Using the Carpet Calculator

Keep in mind that real carpeting projects usually require a 5–10% waste allowance for cuts, seams, and pattern matching. Add that percentage to the calculated area before ordering. Also, if the carpet is sold by the linear yard (a roll of fixed width), divide the total area by the roll width to find how many linear yards you need.

How to Choose a Carpet

  • Pile type — Cut pile (plush, Saxony) is soft and formal; loop pile (Berber) is durable and casual; cut-and-loop adds texture.
  • Fiber — Nylon: durable and stain-resistant. Polyester: soft and affordable. Wool: natural and luxurious. Olefin: moisture-resistant for basements.
  • Padding — A quality pad extends carpet life, adds comfort underfoot, and improves insulation. A thickness of 7/16 in (11 mm) with 6 lb density is a common recommendation.
  • Traffic — High-traffic areas (hallways, stairs) need dense, low-pile, or loop carpet. Bedrooms can have thicker, softer options.

Once you know the area, you can confidently shop for carpet, compare prices per square yard or square meter, and budget your flooring project accurately.
