What is Conversion Rate?

In marketing, the conversion rate is a key performance metric. It represents the percentage of users who complete a desired action out of the total users who engage with a marketing campaign or interact with a website. It is essential for measuring how effectively a company's marketing efforts are at driving potential customers to take specific actions — whether it's signing up for a newsletter, making a purchase, downloading an app, or any other defined objective.

You can categorize conversions into two groups: micro and macro conversions.

  • Micro-conversions are smaller actions that users take that signal engagement, such as adding items to a cart, signing up for emails, or clicking on a specific link. These indicate interest and progress in the customer journey towards a larger goal.
  • Macro-conversions are the primary, larger conversions that reflect the ultimate business objectives, such as completing a purchase, signing up for a subscription, or filling out a lead generation form.

How to Use the Conversion Rate Calculator

Our tool offers two options to calculate the conversion rate:

  1. For Website — uses total visits as the denominator.
  2. For Ads, Posts, or Links — uses total clicks as the denominator.

Simply select the option that fits your needs, enter the number of conversions and the number of visits (or clicks), and the result will be displayed instantly.

Example: Your recent ad had 98 conversions and 1,960 clicks. Select "For Ads, Posts or Links", enter the values, and the tool will return a 5% conversion rate.

Conversion Rate Formulas

Conversion Rate of a Website

Conversion Rate = (Total Conversions / Total Visits) × 100

Divide the number of conversions by the total number of visits, then multiply by 100 to get the percentage.

Example: 72 conversions / 900 visits × 100 = 8%

Conversion Rate of a Campaign, Ad, or Post

Conversion Rate = (Total Conversions / Total Clicks) × 100

The formula is similar, but divides by total clicks instead of visits.

Example: 32 conversions / 689 clicks × 100 = 4.64%

What Is a Good Conversion Rate?

Conversion rate benchmarks vary widely by industry, channel, and goal type. As a general guide:

  • Below 1% — Low. Significant room for improvement.
  • 1–3% — Below average for most industries.
  • 3–5% — Average. Comparable to industry norms.
  • 5–10% — Good. Above average performance.
  • 10%+ — Excellent. Top-tier performance.

Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO)

Conversion rate optimization (CRO) is the process of increasing the percentage of users who take a desired action on your website, app, ad, or other digital platform. Key elements include:

  • Understand your audience through research using tools like surveys and session recordings.
  • Define your business goals and identify what conversion means for you.
  • Analyze data using platforms like Google Analytics to identify hindrances in the user experience.
  • Hypothesize and experiment with A/B tests and multivariate testing.
  • Optimize key areas like landing pages, call-to-actions (CTAs), UX navigation, and creative content.
  • Iterate continuously — CRO is not a one-and-done task. It requires regular refinements.

FAQs

What is a conversion in marketing?

A conversion is when a user completes a desired action — such as making a purchase, filling a form, subscribing to a newsletter, or downloading an app.

Is a higher conversion rate always better?

Generally yes, but context matters. A very high conversion rate on low-quality leads may not translate into revenue. Always analyze in conjunction with lead quality and average order value.

What is the difference between conversion rate for websites vs. ads?

For websites, the denominator is the number of unique visits or sessions. For ads or posts, the denominator is the number of clicks. Both formulas share the same structure, but measure different stages of the funnel.

How do I improve my conversion rate?

Common tactics include improving landing page design, adding clear CTAs, simplifying forms, using social proof (testimonials, reviews), and running A/B tests to identify what resonates with your audience.
