Bank Deposit Calculator: How to Calculate Deposit Income

Our deposit calculator helps you quickly and accurately calculate how much you can earn by opening a bank deposit. Whether you're considering a savings account, certificate of deposit (CD), or fixed-term deposit, this tool will show you the potential returns on your investment.

How to Use the Deposit Calculator

  1. Enter the Initial Amount — how much money you plan to deposit initially
  2. Set the Interest Rate — annual interest rate offered by your bank (typically 3-10%)
  3. Choose the Term — deposit duration in months (from 1 month to 10 years)
  4. Select Capitalization Frequency — how often interest is added to principal:
    • Monthly — best for maximum returns
    • Quarterly — common for many bank deposits
    • Annual — once per year
    • At maturity — all interest paid when deposit matures
  5. Add Monthly Deposits (Optional) — if you plan to add money regularly

What is Compound Interest?

Compound interest is when you earn interest not only on your initial deposit but also on previously earned interest. This is sometimes called "interest on interest" and significantly increases your returns over time.

Example: If you deposit $10,000 at 7.5% annual interest with monthly capitalization for 1 year:

  • Initial deposit: $10,000
  • Interest earned: ~$776
  • Final amount: $10,776

With simple interest (no compounding), you would only earn $750. The difference of $26 comes from compound interest!

Capitalization Frequency: Which is Better?

The more frequently interest is capitalized, the more you earn:

  • Monthly capitalization — 12 times per year (highest returns)
  • Quarterly capitalization — 4 times per year
  • Annual capitalization — once per year
  • At maturity — no compounding effect

Regular Monthly Deposits: Building Wealth

Adding regular monthly deposits to your savings significantly accelerates wealth building. For example:

  • Initial deposit: $10,000
  • Monthly addition: $500
  • Rate: 7.5% with monthly capitalization
  • Term: 12 months
  • Result: $16,453 (vs. $10,776 without monthly deposits)

Types of Bank Deposits

  • Savings Account — flexible access, lower rates (1-3%)
  • Certificate of Deposit (CD) — fixed term, higher rates (3-7%)
  • Money Market Account — limited transactions, competitive rates (2-5%)
  • High-Yield Savings — online banks, best rates (4-8%)

Tips for Choosing a Deposit

  • Compare rates — different banks offer different rates
  • Check FDIC insurance — make sure your deposit is insured (up to $250,000)
  • Consider your timeline — longer terms usually offer better rates
  • Watch for penalties — early withdrawal fees can reduce your earnings
  • Factor in inflation — ensure your real return (rate minus inflation) is positive
  • Diversify — don't put all your savings in one place

When to Use a Deposit Calculator

  • Planning to open a new savings account or CD
  • Comparing offers from different banks
  • Setting savings goals for major purchases
  • Building an emergency fund
  • Planning retirement savings strategy
