Digit Sum Calculator

The digit sum calculator enables you to find the total sum of digits in any given set of numbers. You may view the results for each number separately or the entire set of numbers together. The outcome will be displayed as a table of the sum of digits. You also have the option to find the count of digits for the numbers, and an example of the sum of digits to see how the calculator works!

In the short article below, we explain what a digit sum is, how the calculator adds up the digits of a whole set of numbers, walk through a worked example, and look at what digit sums are actually used for.

What is digit sum?

We can obtain the sum of digits by adding the digits of a number while ignoring the place values. So, for example, if we have the number 567, we can calculate the digit sum as 5 + 6 + 7, which gives us 18.

S(567) = 5 + 6 + 7 = 18

Notice that the 5 in 567 really means "five hundred", but the digit sum does not care — it treats the 5 simply as a 5. That is the whole trick: a digit sum looks at the written form of the number, not at its value. In this manner, we can find the total sum of the digits of any positive integer using our digit sum calculator. The calculator also works for numbers of different orders of magnitude, from a single-digit 0 up to numbers dozens of digits long.

The sum of digits calculator considers the number of occurrences of each digit in the given numbers. It calculates the partial sum of each digit by multiplying the number of occurrences of the digit and the digit itself. It then adds these partial sums to find the total sum of digits. That is why every result includes an occurrence table — it is a second, independent route to the same answer:

Total = ∑ (digit × how many times it occurs)

💡 It's also interesting to note that numbers occurring in everyday life tend to follow Benford's law — leading digits are far more often 1 than 9. If you're curious, the digit occurrence table below your results is a nice place to notice that pattern in your own data.

How do I calculate the sum of digits of all numbers?

In order to find the sum of digits of the entire set of numbers, here's what you need to do:

  1. Key in all the numbers into the digit sum calculator (up to 10 numbers), one per line or separated by spaces or commas.
  2. Choose the Sum of digits option.
  3. For the treatment of numbers, choose As a single group.
  4. Voila! The sum of digits calculator will give you the total sum of all digits across all the numbers that you entered!

If instead you pick Each number separately, you'll get a table with one row per number, showing the digit count, the digit sum, and the digital root of each — plus a totals row at the bottom.

You may also input a set of consecutive integers to find the sum of digits in all those numbers! Switch the input mode to Consecutive integers and give a range such as 1 → 100; the calculator will add up the digits of every number in between (up to 500 numbers at a time).

⚠️ But if you're looking to calculate the total sum of the numbers and not just the digits, then a digit sum is not what you want — that's ordinary addition. Alternatively, you may also be after the digital root of the numbers, which this calculator reports for you.

Sum of digits example

Let's say you want to find the sum of digits in the following numbers:

  • 1111177770999
  • 5555555555
  • 0

After selecting the Sum of digits option, if you choose to treat each number separately, then you'll get the sum of digits as a table, as follows:

NumberDigitsSum of digitsDigital root
111117777099913606
555555555510505
0100
Total24110—

For the number 1111177770999, the digits are five 1s, four 7s, one 0 and three 9s. Rather than adding thirteen digits one by one, group them by occurrence:

(1 × 5) + (7 × 4) + (0 × 1) + (9 × 3) = 5 + 28 + 0 + 27 = 60

Similarly, 5555555555 is just ten 5s, so its digit sum is 5 × 10 = 50. And the digit sum of 0 is 0 — it has one digit, and that digit is zero.

Now, if you choose As a single group instead, the calculator treats all three numbers as one pile of 24 digits and returns a single total: 60 + 50 + 0 = 110.

What is digit sum used for?

Digit sums look like a curiosity, but they turn up in a lot of practical places:

  • Divisibility tests. A number is divisible by 3 exactly when its digit sum is divisible by 3, and by 9 exactly when its digit sum is divisible by 9. Since S(1111177770999) = 60 and 60 is divisible by 3 but not 9, the original number is divisible by 3 but not by 9 — checked without dividing anything.
  • Casting out nines. An old hand-arithmetic sanity check: the digit sum of a result must be consistent with the digit sums of the inputs, so a slip in a long addition or multiplication shows up immediately.
  • Checksums and check digits. Digit-sum arithmetic underpins schemes like the Luhn algorithm used to validate credit card numbers, plus ISBN and IBAN check digits.
  • Numerology and puzzles. The digital root — repeatedly summing digits down to a single digit — is the basis of countless puzzles, magic tricks, and numerology systems.
  • Data and pricing by digit. Anywhere the count of digits drives a cost or a length: engraving a serial number, laying out characters on a display, or estimating how much tape or wire a run of numbering will consume.

Digit sum vs. digital root

These two are close cousins and easy to mix up:

  • The digit sum adds the digits once: S(1111177770999) = 60.
  • The digital root keeps going until one digit is left: 60 → 6 + 0 = 6.

The digital root of any positive integer n equals 1 + ((n − 1) mod 9), and the digital root of 0 is 0. This is why the digital root tells you the remainder of a number after division by 9 (with a root of 9 meaning a remainder of 0).

Units, currencies, and value per digit

Once you know how many digits (or how large a digit sum) you're dealing with, you often want to attach a rate to it. That's what the optional value per unit of result field does: it multiplies your result by the rate you give and tags it with a unit of your choice:

  • World currencies — USD ($), RUB (₽), EUR (€), GBP (£), JPY (¥), CNY (¥), and 14 more. Engraving at ₽12.50 per digit across 24 digits comes to ₽300.
  • Metric units — m, km, cm, mm, kg, g, t, L, mL, m², m³, °C. At 1.5 cm of label tape per digit, 24 digits need 36 cm.
  • US / imperial units — in, ft, yd, mi, lb, oz, gal, fl oz, ft², ft³, °F.

Leave the field blank and the calculator simply reports the plain digit sum or digit count.

FAQs

What is the digit sum of 567? It's 18, because 5 + 6 + 7 = 18. Place values are ignored, so the 5 counts as 5 and not as 500.

What is the sum of digits of 1111177770999? It's 60. The number contains five 1s, four 7s, one 0, and three 9s, giving (1×5) + (7×4) + (0×1) + (9×3) = 5 + 28 + 0 + 27 = 60.

How many numbers can I enter at once? Up to 10 numbers in list mode, or a range of up to 500 consecutive integers in range mode.

What is the digit sum of 0? Zero. The number 0 has exactly one digit, and that digit contributes nothing to the sum.

Can I use decimals or negative numbers? No — the digit sum is defined for non-negative whole numbers. A minus sign and a decimal point are not digits, so they have no value to contribute.

How do I know if a number is divisible by 3 or 9? Take its digit sum. If the digit sum is divisible by 3, so is the number; the same rule holds for 9. You can repeat the trick on the digit sum itself if it's still large.

What's the difference between the sum of digits and the sum of the numbers? The sum of digits of 12 and 30 is (1+2) + (3+0) = 6, while the sum of the numbers is 12 + 30 = 42. The first ignores place value; the second is ordinary addition.
