Diopter Calculator

Have you ever wondered what the optical power of the human eye is, or wanted to convert it to focal length? Our diopter calculator is at your service. Whether you need it for research purposes or are just curious by nature, it is the easiest way to move between optical power and focal length.

You can also use it as a focal length to diopter converter. But don't think it's all about conversion — this article is full of information revolving around optical power, diopters, and focal length. Here are some of the topics we will be discussing:

  • What is a diopter? — Diopter definition;
  • How to find the power of a lens;
  • How to use the diopter calculator;
  • Converting diopter to focal length;
  • Diopter with respect to magnification and focal length; and
  • FAQs.

What is a diopter? — Diopter definition

To understand what a diopter is, first we need to know about the power of a lens. The power of a lens is its ability to converge a beam of light falling on it. For example, a powerful lens will focus parallel light rays closer to itself and into a smaller, more intense spot.

The diopter (D) is the SI unit of lens power and is defined as one divided by the focal length of the lens measured in meters. You might have seen the term diopter on eyeglasses and contact lens prescriptions issued by optometrists.

⚠️ Don't confuse this power with the concept of power you read about in work and power. Optical power describes a lens, not energy per unit time.

How to find the power of a lens

The power of a lens P is expressed as the reciprocal of its focal length f:

P = 1 / f

To find the power in diopters (D), we need to convert the focal length into meters:

P [D] = 1 / f [m]

You may use this as the diopter formula, as the optical power is expressed in diopters.

For example, if the focal length of a lens is 20 cm, we first convert it to meters (0.20 m) and then calculate its power in diopters:

P = 1 / 0.20 m = 5 D

A positive power corresponds to a converging (convex) lens, while a negative power corresponds to a diverging (concave) lens.

How to use the diopter calculator

  1. Choose what you want to calculate: Focal Length → Power (find the diopters from a known focal length) or Power → Focal Length (find the focal length from a known power).
  2. Select your preferred unit system — Metric (mm, cm, m) or American (inches, feet) — for the focal length.
  3. Enter the focal length (with its unit) or the optical power in diopters. Use negative values for diverging lenses.
  4. Click Calculate to instantly get the result, expressed in every common unit, along with the lens type and angular magnification.

Converting diopter to focal length

Since power and focal length are reciprocals, converting a diopter value into a focal length is simply a matter of inverting the formula:

f [m] = 1 / P [D]

For instance, a lens with a power of 5 D has a focal length of:

f = 1 / 5 D = 0.20 m = 20 cm
Optical Power (D) Focal Length (m) Focal Length (cm)
+1.0 D1.000 m100.0 cm
+2.0 D0.500 m50.0 cm
+5.0 D0.200 m20.0 cm
+10.0 D0.100 m10.0 cm
−4.0 D−0.250 m−25.0 cm

Diopter with respect to magnification and focal length

For a simple magnifier, the angular magnification at the near point of the human eye (taken as 25 cm) is directly related to the lens power:

M = 0.25 m / f = P / 4

This means a converging lens with a power of 4 D provides a magnification of about 1× at the near point, while a 20 D lens provides roughly 5×. The higher the diopter rating of a magnifier, the stronger the magnification it produces.

FAQs

What is the optical power of the human eye?
The relaxed human eye has a total optical power of approximately +59 D, of which the cornea contributes about +43 D and the lens about +16 D. This corresponds to an effective focal length of roughly 1.7 cm inside the eye.

How do I convert a focal length of 20 cm to diopters?
Convert 20 cm to meters (0.20 m), then take the reciprocal: P = 1 / 0.20 = 5 D.

What does a negative diopter mean?
A negative power indicates a diverging (concave) lens, used to correct myopia (near-sightedness). A positive power indicates a converging (convex) lens, used to correct hyperopia (far-sightedness).

Can I enter the focal length in inches?
Yes. Switch the unit system to American and enter the focal length in inches or feet — the calculator converts everything to meters internally before computing the power.

Is the diopter the same as magnification?
Not exactly. The diopter measures optical power, but for a simple magnifier the magnification at the near point equals the power divided by four (M = P / 4).
