How to Use the Drive Time Calculator

Our drive time calculator covers every aspect of your trip: it calculates the total time needed to complete your journey, predicts your estimated time of arrival (ETA) at the destination, and determines the overall cost of the drive including the cost per person.

Step 1 — Choose Your Units

Select between Metric (km, km/h, L/100km) or Imperial (miles, mph, mpg) depending on your preference or country. The calculator supports both systems equally.

Step 2 — Select Calculation Mode

  • Forward (Departure → Arrival): Enter your departure time to find out when you'll arrive.
  • Reverse (Arrival → Departure): Enter your desired arrival time to find out when you need to leave.

Step 3 — Enter Trip Details

  1. Enter the total distance of your trip (km or miles).
  2. Specify your average driving speed (km/h or mph).
  3. Enter the total break time in minutes (rest stops, meals, etc.).
  4. Enter your departure date and time (or arrival time in reverse mode).

Step 4 — Add Fuel Cost (Optional)

Check "Show fuel cost" to unlock the fuel section:

  1. Enter your car's fuel consumption (L/100km or MPG).
  2. Enter the current fuel price per liter or per gallon.
  3. Enter the number of passengers to split the cost.

Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA)

The Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) is the time when a vehicle is expected to arrive at a particular destination. The travel distance is divided by the average speed to estimate the drive time, and this is added to your departure time.

The formula is straightforward:

  • Drive Time = Distance ÷ Average Speed
  • Total Trip Time = Drive Time + Break Time
  • Arrival Time = Departure Time + Total Trip Time

Example: Road Trip Calculation

Let's say you're driving from home to a seaside resort:

  • Distance: 140 km (87 miles)
  • Average speed: 80 km/h (50 mph)
  • Break time: 30 minutes
  • Departure: January 22, 2024 at 7:00 pm

Calculation:

  • Drive time = 140 ÷ 80 = 1 hour 45 minutes
  • Total time = 1h 45min + 30min = 2 hours 15 minutes
  • Arrival = January 22, 2024 at 9:15 pm

With fuel data: 8 L/100km, price $0.90/L → Total cost: $10.08 ($5.04 per person with 2 passengers).

Travel Time to Home — Long Trip Example

Driving home from a winter mountain vacation:

  • Distance: 850 km | Speed: 110 km/h | 3 × 15min breaks + 1h dinner = 1h 45min total breaks
  • Drive time = 850 ÷ 110 ≈ 7h 43min
  • Total = 9 hours 28 minutes

FAQs

How do I calculate average speed?

Subtract break time from total travel time, then divide trip distance by the remaining time. For example: 215 miles in 3h 35min (without breaks) = 60 mph average speed.

How fast can I reach Boston from New York driving at 60 mph?

The I-90 W route is approximately 215 miles. At 60 mph: 215 ÷ 60 ≈ 3 hours 35 minutes driving time. With a 15-minute break: 3 hours 50 minutes total.

How far can you drive in one day?

Assuming 8 hours of total time at 60 mph, with breaks (15 min + 60 min lunch + 15 min = 1h 30min), the actual driving time is 6h 30min. Distance = 6.5 × 60 = 390 miles (about 628 km).

Does the calculator account for traffic?

The drive time calculator uses your entered average speed and does not factor in unexpected traffic, road conditions, or detours. For best results, use a realistic average speed that accounts for typical conditions on your route.
