Elliptical Training
An elliptical trainer, or a cross-trainer, is a stationary exercise machine that lets you stair climb, walk, or run without causing too much impact on your joints. Cross-trainers offer a cardiovascular workout that can vary in intensity depending on the resistance settings and speed. This kind of activity has many health benefits, including:
- Reduced risk of cardiovascular disease;
- Better weight management;
- Reduced risk of type 2 diabetes and some forms of cancer;
- Better control of blood pressure; and
- Stronger bones, muscles, and joints.
The WHO recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity (or at least 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity physical activity) per week for adults.
How Many Calories Does Elliptical Burn?
An average person burns 350–450 calories per hour on an elliptical machine at a moderate intensity level. However, a more accurate estimate uses the MET-based formula:
Where:
- time — Time spent exercising in seconds
- weight — Body weight in kilograms
- MET — Metabolic Equivalent of Task (varies from 4.6 to 5.7 on an elliptical)
What Is MET?
MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) is a unit that measures how much energy an activity consumes compared to being at rest. One MET represents the energy cost of sitting still — approximately 1 kcal per kilogram per hour, or an oxygen uptake of 3.5 ml per kilogram per minute.
The elliptical calorie calculator uses MET values from the 2011 Compendium of Physical Activities:
| Activity Type | MET Value |
|---|---|
| Resistance level 2 — light effort | 4.6 |
| Resistance level 5 — moderate effort | 4.9 |
| Resistance level 8 — vigorous effort | 5.7 |
Practical Example
Let's estimate the elliptical calories for Richard, who weighs 75 kg (165 lbs). He exercises every other day for 45 minutes using a cross-trainer at resistance level 5 (moderate effort, MET = 4.9).
- Convert minutes to seconds: 45 × 60 = 2,700 seconds
- Apply the formula:
calories = 2700 × 4.9 × 3.5 × 75 ÷ (200 × 60)
calories = 3,472,875 ÷ 12,000
calories = ≈ 289 kcal
Richard burns approximately 290 kcal during each training session.
Tips for Maximizing Elliptical Calorie Burn
- Increase resistance: Higher resistance increases your MET and calorie burn significantly.
- Use your arms: Push and pull the handlebars actively to engage your upper body.
- Vary your speed: Interval training (alternating fast and slow) can boost total calorie expenditure.
- Go longer: More minutes on the machine always means more calories burned.
- Train consistently: Regular elliptical sessions contribute to better weight management and cardiovascular health.
Metric and Imperial Units
This elliptical calorie calculator supports both measurement systems:
- Metric: weight in kilograms (kg)
- Imperial (American): weight in pounds (lbs)
The calculator automatically converts your weight to kilograms for the formula and shows the result in both units.
