Calculate EV Charging Time and Cost

Our electric vehicle charging calculator helps you estimate charging time, cost, and range for your EV. Perfect for planning trips, budgeting charging expenses, and understanding your EV's charging capabilities.

How It Works

The calculator uses the following formula:

  • Energy Needed (kWh) = Battery Capacity × (Target Charge % - Current Charge %) ÷ 100
  • Charging Time (hours) = Energy Needed ÷ Charging Power ÷ Efficiency (90%)
  • Charging Cost ($) = Actual Energy Needed × Electricity Rate
  • Estimated Range (miles) = Energy Needed × 3.5 miles/kWh (average)

Battery Capacities of Popular EVs

  • Tesla Model 3: 50-82 kWh
  • Tesla Model Y: 60-82 kWh
  • Chevy Bolt EV: 65 kWh
  • Ford Mustang Mach-E: 68-91 kWh
  • Nissan Leaf: 40-62 kWh
  • Hyundai Ioniq 5: 58-77 kWh

Charging Power Levels

  • Level 1 (120V): 1.4 kW - Standard household outlet
  • Level 2 (240V): 3.3-19.2 kW - Home charger or public stations
  • DC Fast Charging: 50-350 kW - Highway charging stations

Average US Electricity Rates (2024)

  • National Average: $0.13/kWh
  • Hawaii: $0.32/kWh (highest)
  • Louisiana: $0.09/kWh (lowest)
  • California: $0.22/kWh
  • Public DC Fast Charging: $0.30-0.60/kWh

Charging Tips

  • 80% Rule: Charging to 80% is faster and better for battery health
  • Off-Peak Hours: Charge during off-peak hours (usually 9 PM - 7 AM) for lower rates
  • Battery Temperature: Extreme cold or heat can reduce charging speed
  • Fast Charging: Use sparingly as it can reduce battery longevity
  • Home Charging: Most cost-effective option for daily charging

Note: Actual results may vary based on battery condition, temperature, charger efficiency, and driving conditions. The calculator uses average values for estimation purposes.
