How to Use the Face Shape Calculator

Whether you're male or female, the face shape calculator will determine your face shape quickly and easily. Here's how to use it:

  1. Select your sex (optional). There are no separate female and male face shapes, but selecting your sex will personalize some style recommendations.
  2. Choose your unit system — Imperial (inches) or Metric (centimeters).
  3. Measure your face in front of a mirror in a well-lit room. You need four measurements:
    • Forehead width — at its widest point, usually halfway between your hairline and your eyebrows.
    • Cheekbones width — the distance between the outer corners of your eyes (zygomatic width).
    • Jawline length — measured from your chin to the outer edge of your ear (one side only).
    • Face length — from the start of your hairline to the tip of your chin.
  4. Select your face's level of sharpness. Sharper faces have more straight lines and hard angles, while rounder faces have more curves and softer lines.

With these details, the face shape calculator will tell you which of the seven face shapes matches you best.

We try our best to make our calculator as precise and reliable as possible. However, this tool can never replace a professional assessment. Face shapes are highly subjective — if you disagree with the result, that's totally fine!

The Seven Face Shapes

The Oval Face Shape

You have an oval face if it's longer than it is wide, and your cheekbones are a bit wider than both your jaw and your forehead. Your forehead can be on the slightly taller side, and you might have prominent cheekbones. The oval is widely considered the most versatile face shape for hairstyles and eyewear.

The Round Face Shape

Your face is round if your cheekbones at their widest are roughly the same width as the length of your face. Your hairline and jawline are subtle, rounded lines with no sharp angles. Soft and symmetrical, the round face shape benefits from styles that add length and definition.

The Oblong Face Shape

Also referred to as rectangular, the oblong face shape is similar to the oval. The difference is that an oblong face has a cheek line that is longer and relatively straight, giving the face a more elongated, rectangular appearance.

The Square Face Shape

To say that your face is square, you need a relatively straight line along its sides from forehead to jaw, a strong horizontal jawline, and the width and length of your face roughly equal. Square-shaped faces have a powerful, defined look.

The Triangle Face Shape

If your jaw is wider than your forehead, and your cheekbones are no wider than your chin, your face shape is a triangle (sometimes called a pyramid in fashion). The jawline is the widest measurement, tapering upward to a narrower forehead.

The Diamond Face Shape

If your cheekbones are prominent and wider than both your chin and your forehead, you likely have a diamond-shaped face. The lines along your face are also distinctly more angular than in the oval shape. The diamond face has narrow forehead and jawline with wide cheekbones as the dominant feature.

The Heart Face Shape

Also called an inverted triangle, the heart shape is characterized by equally wide forehead and cheekbones, or a forehead that is slightly wider than the cheekbones. It's accentuated with a significantly thinner chin. The heart shape is one of the most distinctive and photogenic face shapes.

How Do You Determine Face Shape?

Face shapes are subjective, but there are some general rules you can follow:

  • If your face is longer than wide and your cheekbones are wider than both jaw and forehead, you might have an oval face shape.
  • If your face is longer than wide and your jaw is about as wide as your forehead, you might have an oblong face shape.
  • If your face is as long as wide with a soft jawline and rounded hairline, you might have a round face shape.
  • If your face is as long as wide and you have a wide, angular jawline, you might have a square face shape.
  • If your jawline is wider than your cheekbones and forehead, you might have a triangle face shape.
  • If your forehead is significantly wider than your jaw and close in width to your cheekbones, you might have a heart face shape.
  • If both your jaw and forehead are narrow while your cheekbones are prominent and wide, you might have a diamond face shape.

Why Is Your Face Shape Important?

Knowing your face shape matters if you want to look your best. As a general rule, you want to wear items that create balance or contrast with your natural face shape:

  • Round or oval faces — benefit from angular glasses, structured hats, and hairstyles that add height or length.
  • Square faces — soften with round or oval eyewear, curved hairstyles, and accessories with soft lines.
  • Heart faces — balance with bottom-heavy styles, wider jaw-level accessories, and chin-length hairstyles.
  • Triangle faces — add width at the top with hairstyles and glasses that are wider at the top.
  • Diamond faces — emphasize the eyes and soften the forehead and jaw with oval or cat-eye frames.
  • Oblong faces — add width with layered hairstyles, wide-frame glasses, and horizontal necklines.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my face shape change over time?

Yes! Face shape can change due to weight gain or loss, aging (which affects bone structure and skin elasticity), and hormonal changes. It's worth rechecking your face shape periodically.

What is the rarest face shape?

The diamond face shape is considered one of the rarest, characterized by narrow forehead and jawline with prominent wide cheekbones. The oval face shape is generally considered the most common.

Can men and women have the same face shapes?

Yes — the seven face shapes apply to everyone regardless of sex. However, certain shapes may appear differently due to differences in bone structure, facial hair, and fat distribution. Male faces tend to have more angular, defined features while female faces are often softer and rounder.

What if I'm between two face shapes?

Many people have features of two face shapes. The calculator gives you the closest match based on your measurements. Trust your own judgment too — you know your face better than any algorithm!
