What is GPA? GPA meaning 🎓

GPA stands for Grade Point Average. It's a score that measures your academic achievement and is used throughout your educational career: in middle school, high school, and college. The basic formula for calculating GPA is to divide the total points earned in a program by the total number of courses. If your courses have credits, or if they are graded differently (e.g., honors courses), you need to compute the weighted average. Scroll down to read more about GPA weighting.

GPA scale — GPA converter chart

If you're searching for a GPA converter, you're most likely looking for a GPA scale table, which shows the grade point equivalents:

Name Percentage grade Grade point (4.0 scale) Grade point (+4.0 scale)
A+97–1004.04.3
A93–964.04.0
A−90–923.73.7
B+87–893.33.3
B83–863.03.0
B−80–822.72.7
C+77–792.32.3
C73–762.02.0
C−70–721.71.7
D+67–691.31.3
D65–661.01.0
FBelow 650.00.0

The table above presents one of the standard 4.0 GPA scales. However, different schools may use different systems; unfortunately, it's not universal by any means. Before using our GPA calculator, make sure this is the grading scale your school has adopted. Pick the 4.0 scale for an unweighted GPA (where both A and A+ equal 4.0), or the +4.0 scale if your school awards a 4.3 for an A+.

How to calculate my GPA

We're here to convince you that calculating your GPA is not nearly as difficult as you think! Let's have a look at an example grade card:

CourseGrade
MathsA
BiologyC+
HistoryB
EnglishA−

To calculate the GPA, you first need to convert your grades (expressed in letters) into a numerical scale. For that, use the GPA scale table from the previous paragraph:

  • Maths: A → 4.0
  • Biology: C+ → 2.3
  • History: B → 3.0
  • English: A− → 3.7

Then, since these courses have no credits, simply take the average of the grade points:

GPA = (4.0 + 2.3 + 3.0 + 3.7) ÷ 4 = 13.0 ÷ 4 = 3.25

If your courses carry credits (credit hours), the GPA becomes a weighted average. Multiply each course's grade point by its number of credits to get the "quality points," add them all up, and divide by the total number of credits:

GPA = Σ (Grade point × Credits) ÷ Σ Credits

For example, an A (4.0) worth 3 credits, a B (3.0) worth 4 credits, and a C+ (2.3) worth 3 credits gives:

GPA = (4.0×3 + 3.0×4 + 2.3×3) ÷ (3 + 4 + 3) = (12 + 12 + 6.9) ÷ 10 = 3.09

Cumulative GPA

Your cumulative GPA (sometimes called CGPA) is the grade point average across all the semesters you've completed so far, not just the current one. To find it, combine your previous quality points and credits with your current ones:

Cumulative GPA = (Prior GPA × Prior credits + Current quality points) ÷ (Prior credits + Current credits)

In our GPA calculator, just fill in the optional Cumulative GPA fields with your prior GPA and the total credits earned before this term. The tool will merge them with your current courses to give you an updated cumulative GPA automatically.

Grade Point Average calculator — how to use

  1. Choose your grade format. Use the American (letter grades A+ to F) system, or switch to the Metric (percentage, 0–100) system if you enter grades as percentages.
  2. Pick a GPA scale — the standard 4.0 scale or the +4.0 scale (A+ = 4.3).
  3. Enter your courses. Type an optional course name, select the grade (or percentage), and — if your school uses them — the number of credits. Leave credits blank to compute an unweighted average. Click "Add course" for more rows.
  4. Optionally add your cumulative data to blend this term with your academic history.
  5. Read your GPA, its letter equivalent, total credits, and quality points on the right, along with a full breakdown table and the conversion chart.

FAQs

What is a good GPA?

On a 4.0 scale, a GPA of 3.5 or above is generally considered very good, and 3.0 (a solid B average) is a common benchmark for many programs. However, "good" depends heavily on your school, your program, and your goals — some competitive scholarships and graduate programs look for 3.7+.

How do I calculate GPA without credits?

If your courses don't use credit hours, just leave the credits fields blank. The calculator then treats every course equally and returns the simple average of your grade points.

What's the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

An unweighted GPA treats every course the same (max 4.0). A weighted GPA gives more influence to courses with more credit hours — or higher points to honors/AP courses on a +4.0 scale — so a heavy, high-scoring course moves your average more than a light one.

Can I convert a percentage to GPA?

Yes. Switch the grade format to Metric (percentage) and enter your scores from 0 to 100. The calculator maps each percentage to a letter grade and its grade point using the conversion chart above.

How many courses can I add?

You can add up to 8 courses. Start with the first four rows and click "Add course" to reveal more as you need them.
