How Many Tables Calculator
The How Many Tables Calculator is a practical tool that helps you find the correct table size for a party, wedding, or your dining room. It works in two modes: given your table's dimensions, it tells you how many guests can be seated; or given a number of guests, it tells you how many tables you need.
Seats at the Rectangular Table
Most dining tables are rectangular in shape. The calculator places guests along both longer sides of the table. Each person is assumed to need 60 cm (about 24 inches) of space to sit comfortably — you can adjust this value if your situation calls for more or less room.
Optionally, you can also seat guests at the short ends (head of the table), adding 2 extra seats to the total count. For example, a rectangular table 240 cm long fits:
- 4 seats per side × 2 sides = 8 seats
- With head seats: 8 + 2 = 10 seats
Round Table Seats
For round tables, the calculator uses the full circumference to determine available seating. Because the edge curves, each person needs a bit more space — the default is 70 cm (about 28 inches) per seat. The formula is:
Seats = 2π × radius ÷ space per person
For example, a round table with a radius of 90 cm can seat approximately 8 people.
How Many Tables for Guests at My Wedding?
Switch to "How many tables do I need?" mode, enter your table's dimensions and the number of guests, and the calculator instantly returns the number of tables required. For 150 guests at round tables with a radius of 150 cm (≈13 seats each), you would need approximately 12 tables.
How to Use the How Many Tables Calculator
- Choose the Calculation Mode: find seats at one table, or find the number of tables for a group.
- Select the Table Shape: rectangular or round.
- Choose the Measurement System: metric (cm) or American (inches).
- Enter the table Length (rectangular) or Radius (round).
- Optionally adjust the Space per Person (default 60 cm / 24 in for rectangular; 70 cm / 28 in for round).
- For rectangular tables, optionally enable Seats at the Head to add 2 end seats.
- If using "tables needed" mode, enter the Number of Guests.

Comparing rectangular and round options for 8 people:
- Rectangular: Length = (8 ÷ 2) × 60 cm = 240 cm. Or seat 6 along the sides (180 cm) and 2 at the head.
- Round: Radius = 8 × 70 cm ÷ (2π) ≈ 89 cm
Both options comfortably seat 8 guests — the choice depends on your room layout and preference.
