Play "Among Us" like a pro
The ongoing surge in online gaming turned many of us into gamers 🎮, and it feels like everyone is playing Among Us now. With its simple rules — similar to widely loved party games like Mafia and Werewolf — the game lets you spend quality time with friends. But if you keep landing as a crewmate game after game, it can start to feel like the odds are stacked against you. That is exactly why we built this Impostor Odds Calculator: to tell you the real chance of getting the role you want across the games you play.
How to use the Impostor odds calculator
The beauty of this calculator is that it's simple. To get your probability, just:
- Number of games — input how many games you want to play.
- Number of impostors and number of players — type the game settings you use.
- Role to check — pick whether you want to check the odds of being the impostor or a crewmate. After all, some people prefer to play as crewmates!
- Type of probability — is it the probability of playing the role exactly three times? Or would you rather check how probable it is to get it five or more times? Pick the option that suits you.
- Number of times (X) — input the value of X.
And, voilà! At the bottom of the calculator you will see your probability result — and we even made a bar chart 📊 to illustrate it. If you're interested in the math behind it, read on.
The math behind being an impostor
In each game of "Among Us" there is a fixed number of players, and some of them are randomly chosen to be impostors. For instance, if eight people are playing and the system decides on two impostors, then 2 / 8 = 1/4 of the astronauts become impostors. So before the roles are given out, there is a 25% chance that one particular player will be the villain.
When you finish the game and start a new one, the rules are the same: there is again a 25% chance of becoming an impostor. This repeated random process with two possible outcomes is what mathematicians call binomial probability.
Let's take three games with two impostors among eight players. What is the probability that one particular player is the impostor exactly twice? The chance of being an impostor in a game is 2 / 8 = 25%, and that of being a crewmate is 6 / 8 = 75%. Our player could be the impostor in games (1 & 2), (1 & 3), or (2 & 3):
25% × 25% × 75% = 4.6875% (impostor in games 1 & 2) 25% × 75% × 25% = 4.6875% (impostor in games 1 & 3) 75% × 25% × 25% = 4.6875% (impostor in games 2 & 3) Total = 4.6875% + 4.6875% + 4.6875% = 14.0625%
So the probability of being an impostor in exactly two out of three games is 14.0625%.
The general formula
If the probability of being an impostor is p, then the chance of playing a crewmate is 1 − p. The probability that a player is the impostor k times in n games is:
P(n, k) = C(n, k) × pk × (1 − p)n − k
where:
- n — number of games played
- k — number of times you play the chosen role
- p — chance of the role in a single game (impostors ÷ players for the impostor role)
- C(n, k) = n! / (k! × (n − k)!) — the number of combinations ("n choose k")
Cumulative probabilities
Sometimes you want the odds over a range of games rather than an exact count. This calculator supports four modes:
- Exactly X times: P(X = k)
- At most X times: P(X ≤ k) — from 0 up to k games
- At least X times: P(X ≥ k) — from k up to all games
- Between X and X₁ times: P(X ≤ · ≤ X₁)
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the chance of being the impostor in a single game?
It equals the number of impostors divided by the number of players. With 2 impostors among 8 players, the chance is 2 / 8 = 25%. The chance of being a crewmate is the rest: 6 / 8 = 75%.
Do more games make it more likely I'll be the impostor?
Yes — the more games you play, the more likely you are to be the impostor at least once, because there are more chances for the role to fall to you. Use the "at least" mode with X = 1 to see this probability.
Why do I keep getting crewmate?
In standard settings, being a crewmate is simply more likely — with 2 impostors and 8 players there are three times as many crewmates. Streaks of the same role are perfectly normal for a random process, so don't lose hope.
Does this calculator guarantee my next role?
No. Each game's role is drawn independently and randomly. The calculator gives the probability of an outcome over many games, not a certainty for any single game.
Can I check the odds for a custom lobby?
Absolutely. Just enter the number of impostors and players your lobby uses. The calculator supports anywhere from 2 to 100 players and any valid number of impostors below that.
