How to Use the Jump Rope Calorie Calculator

Our jump rope calorie calculator makes it easy to find out exactly how many calories you burn during a skipping session — or how long you need to skip to hit a calorie target.

  1. Choose your unit system — Metric (kg) or American (lbs).
  2. Enter your body weight — Heavier individuals burn more calories per minute.
  3. Select your jump rate — The faster you skip, the higher the MET value and the more calories you burn.
  4. Pick a calculation mode:
    • Duration → Calories: Enter how long you plan to jump and get your total calorie burn.
    • Calories → Duration: Enter your calorie target and find out how long to jump.
  5. Click Calculate — Your results appear instantly.

How Many Calories Does Jumping Rope Burn?

Just like any aerobic exercise, the number of calories you burn jumping rope depends on three factors: your body weight, the intensity of the activity (measured by MET), and how long you exercise.

The formula is straightforward:

  • Calorie rate (kcal/min) = MET × weight (kg) × 0.0175
  • Total calories burned = Calorie rate × duration (minutes)

For example, a person weighing 70 kg jumping rope at a fast pace (MET = 11.8) for 30 minutes burns approximately 434 kcal — comparable to running or cycling.

What Is MET?

MET stands for Metabolic Equivalent of Task. It is a measure of the energy cost of physical activities relative to sitting quietly (MET = 1.0). The higher the MET, the more intense the activity.

Our calculator uses MET values from the Compendium of Physical Activities:

Jump Rate Skips per Minute MET Value
Slow< 808.8
Moderate80 – 10011.0
Fast100 – 12011.8
Very Fast> 12012.3

Benefits of Jumping Rope

  • Highly efficient calorie burner — Few exercises match the calorie-per-minute output of jump rope, rivaling running at 8+ mph.
  • Full-body workout — Engages legs, core, shoulders, and arms simultaneously.
  • Improves coordination and agility — Regular skipping sharpens your neuromuscular coordination.
  • Portable and affordable — A jump rope costs almost nothing and fits in any bag.
  • Low space requirement — You can skip rope indoors or in a small outdoor area.
  • Bone density — As a weight-bearing exercise, it helps maintain and improve bone health.
  • Cardiovascular health — Regular sessions strengthen the heart and improve VO₂ max.

Is Jump Rope Good Cardio?

Absolutely. Jump rope is one of the most effective cardiovascular exercises available. At a moderate to fast pace, it elevates your heart rate into the aerobic and anaerobic zones quickly, improving cardiovascular endurance. Studies show that just 10 minutes of jumping rope at a moderate intensity can provide similar cardiovascular benefits as 30 minutes of jogging.

Whether your goal is weight loss, improved stamina, or athletic conditioning, jump rope delivers outstanding cardio benefits in a compact, time-efficient workout.

Jump Rope for Weight Loss

To lose 1 kg (≈ 2.2 lbs) of body fat, you need to burn approximately 7,700 kcal in excess of what you consume. A 70 kg person jumping rope at a fast pace (MET 11.8) for 30 minutes burns roughly 434 kcal. That means about 17–18 such sessions are needed to burn off 1 kg of fat through exercise alone — when combined with a moderate calorie deficit, results come faster.

Use the Calories → Duration mode in our calculator to plan how long each session needs to be to hit your daily calorie-burn goal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does heavier weight mean more calories burned?

Yes. The calorie formula is directly proportional to body weight. A 90 kg person burns about 29% more calories than a 70 kg person performing the same workout at the same intensity for the same duration.

How accurate is this calculator?

The calculator uses standard MET methodology from the Compendium of Physical Activities (Arizona State University). Results are estimates; individual metabolism, fitness level, and exact skipping technique all affect actual calorie burn. Expect an accuracy of ±10–15%.

What counts as "calories" here?

What we colloquially call "calories" in the context of food and exercise are technically kilocalories (kcal). Our calculator uses kcal throughout — the same unit displayed on food labels.

How does jump rope compare to running?

At a fast pace (MET ≈ 11.8), jump rope is roughly equivalent to running at about 9 km/h (5.6 mph). Very fast skipping (MET ≈ 12.3) approaches the intensity of running at 10–11 km/h. The key advantage: you can achieve high-intensity cardio in a tiny space without any special surface.

Can I do jump rope every day?

Beginners should start with 3–4 sessions per week to allow recovery. Experienced athletes can jump rope daily, varying intensity and duration. Always warm up and stretch afterwards to reduce injury risk.
