How to Use the Lawn Mowing Cost Calculator

Our lawn mowing cost calculator helps you in two ways: estimating the cost of hiring a professional mowing service and calculating how long it will take to mow your lawn yourself.

Mode 1 — Professional Mowing Cost

Choose how the company charges:

  • Per area — enter the price per square foot (or m²) and the total lawn area. The calculator multiplies them to give you the total cost.
  • Per hour — enter the hourly rate and the estimated hours of work. The total is simply price × hours.

Supports 9 currencies: USD ($), RUB (₽), EUR (€), GBP (£), CAD (C$), AUD (A$), JPY (¥), CNY (¥), BRL (R$).

Mode 2 — Mowing Time Calculator

If you prefer to mow yourself, enter:

  • Mower speed — how fast the mower travels (mph or km/h).
  • Deck width — the cutting width of your mower (inches or cm).
  • Efficiency — how much of the lawn is actually cut on the first pass. In most cases, 80% is a reasonable estimate due to obstacles, overlapping passes, and lawn shape.
  • Lawn area (optional) — if provided, the calculator shows the estimated mowing time.

How to Calculate Lawn Mowing Cost and Time

Cost Formulas

By area:

Total cost = price per unit area × total lawn area

Example: $2.00/sq ft × 550 sq ft = $1,100.00

By hour:

Total cost = price per hour × hours of work

Example: $50/h × 2.5 h = $125.00

Mowing Time Formula

Step 1 — Effective mowing rate:

Rate = speed × deck width × efficiency

Example (imperial): 3.7 mph × (20 in ÷ 12 ft/in) × 5,280 ft/mile × 80% ≈ 32,704 sq ft/h

Example (metric): 6 km/h × (50 cm ÷ 100 m/cm) × 1,000 m/km × 80% = 2,400 m²/h

Step 2 — Mowing time:

Time = lawn area ÷ effective mowing rate

Example: 0.5 ha ÷ 0.24 ha/h ≈ 2 h 5 min

What Influences Lawn Mowing Cost?

  • What's included? — basic mowing only, or extras like edging, weed-eating, and grass disposal?
  • Lawn condition — a regularly maintained lawn takes less time than one that has been neglected.
  • Service frequency — companies often offer discounts for weekly or bi-monthly contracts. The same lawn might cost $50 once, $45 bi-monthly, and $40 weekly.
  • Distance to your home — transportation costs may increase the price if you live far from the company.
  • Lawn complexity — obstacles like trees, flower beds, and irregular shapes reduce mowing efficiency.

FAQs

How many calories does mowing the lawn burn?

Mowing burns approximately 250–300 calories per hour. Our time calculator shows your estimated calorie burn when you enter a lawn area.

How do I calculate mowing cost by area?

  1. Find the price per unit area from your lawn care company.
  2. Measure your lawn in the same units (sq ft, sq yd, acres, m², or ha).
  3. Multiply: total cost = price × area.

How much would it cost to mow a 55 yd² lawn?

At $2/sq yd: 55 × $2 = $110. Actual prices vary by region and company.

Which unit systems are supported?

Both Imperial (US) — square feet, square yards, acres — and Metric — square meters, hectares — are fully supported.

Tips for Efficient Lawn Mowing

  • Mow in parallel rows to minimize turns and maximize coverage per pass.
  • Keep blades sharp — a dull blade tears grass rather than cutting it cleanly.
  • Never cut more than ⅓ of the grass blade length at once.
  • Mow when the lawn is dry for cleaner cuts and better clipping dispersal.
  • Vary your mowing pattern each time to prevent soil compaction and ruts.
