What is Limestone Rock?

Limestone is a sedimentary rock composed primarily of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃), mostly derived from the skeletal fragments of marine organisms such as coral, mollusks, and foraminifera. It typically appears white or light gray but can range from grayish to nearly black when organic matter is present. Traces of iron oxide or manganese may give it yellowish or reddish hues.

Limestone is one of the most abundant sedimentary rocks on Earth and is quarried worldwide for a wide range of industrial and construction applications.

What is Limestone Used For?

Limestone has numerous uses across multiple industries:

  • Construction — Cut into bricks, pavers, tiles, or crushed for aggregate in concrete and mortar mixes.
  • Cement production — The primary raw material in Portland cement manufacturing.
  • Driveways & walkways — Crushed limestone is a popular base or surface material for driveways, paths, and patios.
  • Road base — Compacted limestone road base provides a stable, load-bearing sub-layer for asphalt and paving.
  • Landscaping — Limestone cobbles, pebbles, and rip rap are widely used in garden beds, water features, and erosion control.
  • Agriculture — Processed limestone (slaked lime) neutralizes acidic soils to optimize plant growth.
  • Manufacturing — Used in producing glass, paper, paint, and as a filler in plastics.

How to Use Our Limestone Calculator

Follow these simple steps to estimate how much limestone you need:

  1. Choose the unit system — select Imperial (ft/in) for US measurements or Metric (m/cm) for international units.
  2. Select the limestone type. Each type has a preset bulk density reflecting its typical grain size and packing. If your supplier provides an exact density, choose Custom and enter it manually. The average bulk density of crushed limestone ranges from 1,440 to 2,560 kg/m³ (90–160 lb/ft³).
  3. Enter the dimensions — provide the length and width of the area you want to cover, or switch to Direct Area mode and enter the square footage or square meters directly.
  4. Enter the depth — the desired thickness of the limestone layer (in inches for Imperial, centimeters for Metric).
  5. Add a wastage percentage — extra material to account for spillage, compaction loss, and uneven ground. A wastage of 5–10% is typical for most projects.
  6. Optionally enter a price per unit of volume or weight, then select your currency to get the total estimated material cost.
  7. Click Calculate Limestone to instantly see the volume, weight, and estimated cost.

How Do You Calculate How Much Limestone You Need?

The calculation involves three steps:

  1. Calculate volume to fill:
    Volume = Length × Width × Depth
  2. Add wastage:
    Volume needed = Volume × (1 + wastage %)
  3. Calculate weight:
Weight = Volume needed × Density of limestone

In Imperial units: if your area is 10 ft × 10 ft with a depth of 4 inches (0.333 ft), the base volume is 10 × 10 × 0.333 = 33.3 ft³, or about 1.23 yd³. With a 5% wastage allowance that becomes 1.30 yd³. Using Crushed Limestone #57 (density ≈ 105 lb/ft³), the weight is approximately 3,665 lbs (1.83 short tons).

In Metric units: a 3 m × 3 m area with 10 cm depth gives a base volume of 0.9 m³. With 5% wastage that becomes 0.945 m³. Using limestone road base (density ≈ 1,760 kg/m³), the weight is approximately 1,663 kg (1.66 tonnes).

Limestone Types and Their Densities

Different grades and sizes of crushed limestone have different bulk densities:

  • Crushed Limestone (Fine/Dust, screenings) — 1,440 kg/m³ (90 lb/ft³). Very fine particles; used for compaction and base layers.
  • Crushed Limestone #57 (¾" stone) — 1,680 kg/m³ (105 lb/ft³). The most common grade for driveways, walkways, and drainage.
  • Crushed Limestone #3 (2" stone) — 1,600 kg/m³ (100 lb/ft³). Coarser aggregate; used for drainage and base layers.
  • Limestone Road Base — 1,760 kg/m³ (110 lb/ft³). Compactable mix used under driveways and roads.
  • Limestone Cobbles/Pebbles — 1,840 kg/m³ (115 lb/ft³). Rounded or angular stones for decorative landscaping.
  • Limestone Rip Rap — 2,000 kg/m³ (125 lb/ft³). Large, irregular stones for erosion control on slopes and shorelines.
  • Solid Limestone Rock — 2,560 kg/m³ (160 lb/ft³). Density of intact rock (for calculating slab or boulder weights).
  • Custom — enter your supplier's density specification directly.

Sample Crushed Limestone Weight Calculation

Suppose you want to lay a crushed limestone driveway that is 40 ft long, 12 ft wide, and 4 inches deep, using Limestone Road Base, with a 10% wastage allowance.

  1. Area = 40 × 12 = 480 ft²
  2. Depth = 4 in = 4/12 = 0.333 ft
  3. Base volume = 480 × 0.333 = 160 ft³ = 5.93 yd³
  4. With 10% wastage: 5.93 × 1.10 = 6.52 yd³
  5. Weight = 6.52 × 27 × 110 = 19,345 lbs ≈ 9.67 short tons

In Metric: the same driveway is approximately 12.2 m × 3.66 m × 10 cm, giving a base volume of 4.47 m³, or 4.91 m³ with 10% wastage. At 1,760 kg/m³, the weight is approximately 8,642 kg (8.64 tonnes).

Frequently Asked Questions

How deep should I lay crushed limestone?

For a decorative garden path or patio, 2–3 inches (5–8 cm) is usually sufficient. For a functional driveway or parking area, 4–6 inches (10–15 cm) of compacted limestone base is recommended. For a base layer beneath pavers or concrete slabs, 4 inches (10 cm) of compacted road base provides a stable foundation.

How many tons of limestone do I need per square foot?

A rough rule of thumb: one US short ton of crushed limestone #57 covers approximately:

  • At 2 inches deep: ~100 ft² (≈ 9.3 m²)
  • At 4 inches deep: ~50 ft² (≈ 4.6 m²)
  • At 6 inches deep: ~33 ft² (≈ 3.1 m²)

These figures vary with limestone type and compaction. Use this calculator for a precise estimate.

What is the difference between limestone and gravel?

Limestone is a specific rock type (calcium carbonate-based sedimentary rock), while gravel is a general term for small stones of any rock type. Crushed limestone is technically a type of crushed stone aggregate, similar to crushed granite or quartzite. Limestone is often preferred for driveways because it compacts well and binds together over time.

Does limestone compact over time?

Yes. Crushed limestone, especially road base and fine grades, compacts under traffic and rainfall. This is usually desirable for driveways as it creates a firmer surface. However, it means the initial depth should be slightly deeper than the final desired surface, or a wastage allowance should be included to account for compaction settlement.

What is the weight of one cubic yard of limestone?

One cubic yard of crushed limestone typically weighs between 2,430 lbs (1.2 short tons) for fine screenings and 4,320 lbs (2.2 short tons) for dense solid rock. Standard crushed limestone #57 weighs approximately 2,835 lbs per cubic yard (105 lb/ft³ × 27 ft³/yd³).
