What Does Lunar Age Mean?
The lunar calendar uses the moon's monthly cycles to determine the date, compared to the solar calendar, which aligns with the year-long period of our planet orbiting the sun. There are many variations of the lunar calendar, each with its own unique meaning and usage in various parts of the world.
Although the Gregorian calendar is a civil standard, various cultures and religions still have a need for other calendars. According to the lunar calendar, the Chinese New Year doesn't occur on the 1st of January of every year and instead occurs between January and February. The Hijri calendar was established in A.D. 622 and is used for Islamic festivities including Ramadan and Eid.
Lunar Age Calculator
Our lunar age calculator provides two calendar options:
- Chinese Lunar Calendar — based on the occurrence of the Chinese New Year
- Hijri (Islamic) Lunar Calendar — based on the 354–355 day lunar year
What Is My Chinese Lunar Age?
The Chinese lunar calendar depends on the occurrence of the Chinese New Year. In the Chinese system, a newborn is considered 1 year old at birth (accounting for time in the womb), and another year is added when the Chinese New Year occurs — not on your birthday.
Formula: Chinese Age = Gregorian Age + 1 (in-womb year) + 1 (if Chinese New Year has already occurred this year)
For example, if your Gregorian age is 33 and the Chinese New Year has already passed, your Chinese lunar age is 35.
What Is My Hijri Lunar Age?
The Hijri lunar calendar is approximately 354–355 days long — about 10–11 days shorter than the Gregorian year. This means that roughly every 33 Gregorian years correspond to 34 Hijri years.
Formula: Hijri Age = Gregorian Age × 1.0307
The factor 1.0307 accounts for the 10-day annual difference between the Hijri and Gregorian calendars.
FAQs
- Why am I older in the Chinese calendar?
- Because Chinese tradition considers a newborn to already be 1 year old at birth (accounting for pregnancy), and a new year of age is added at Chinese New Year rather than on your birthday.
- Is the Hijri year shorter than the Gregorian year?
- Yes — the Hijri (Islamic) lunar year is about 354 days, compared to 365.25 days in the Gregorian calendar. This makes it roughly 10–11 days shorter each year.
- Can I be younger in a lunar calendar?
- In the Hijri calendar, your age will always be slightly higher than your Gregorian age because the Hijri year is shorter — so more Hijri years fit into the same span of time.
- What is the Chinese New Year date?
- The Chinese New Year falls between late January and mid-February each year. If it has already occurred in the current year when you calculate, select "Yes" in the calculator.
