Mass Percent Calculator

The mass percent calculator helps you determine the percentage ratio between the mass of a component in a substance and the total mass of the substance. It supports two modes: calculating the mass percent of a solute in a solution, or the mass percent of a component in a mixture or compound.

Both metric units (grams, kilograms, milligrams) and American/imperial units (ounces, pounds) are supported — choose the unit system that suits your needs.

What is mass percent?

The mass percent (also called mass fraction or weight percent, wt%) represents the concentration of a component of a mixture or compound expressed as a percentage. For solutions, the mass percent is the ratio of the mass of solute to the total mass of the solution, multiplied by 100.

Note: the mass percent of a solution is a property that is independent of temperature, which makes it especially useful in chemistry labs and industrial applications.

Mass percent formula

There are two common variations of the mass percent formula:

Mass percent of a solute in a solution

mass % = (mass of solute / mass of solution) × 100

Where: mass of solution = mass of solute + mass of solvent

Mass percent of a component in a mixture

mass % = (mass of component / total mass of compound) × 100

Mass percent vs. percent composition

Although often confused, mass percent and percent composition are distinct concepts:

  • Mass percent gives the percentage ratio of the mass of a component in a mixture to the total mass of the substance.
  • Percent composition represents the mass percentage of each element in a compound, typically derived from the chemical formula.

How to calculate mass percent — example

Suppose you dissolve 10 g of sodium chloride (NaCl) in 90 g of water:

  • Mass of solute = 10 g
  • Mass of solvent = 90 g
  • Mass of solution = 10 + 90 = 100 g
  • Mass percent = (10 / 100) × 100 = 10%

Unit systems

Our calculator supports both measurement systems:

  • Metric system: grams (g), kilograms (kg), milligrams (mg)
  • American/imperial system: ounces (oz), pounds (lb)

All calculations are performed in grams internally — the selected unit only affects how you enter and read values. The resulting mass percent (%) is always unit-independent.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use any unit of mass?

Yes. Because mass percent is a ratio, it does not depend on the specific unit of mass, as long as you use the same unit for all values. Our calculator handles unit conversion automatically.

What is the difference between mass percent and molarity?

Molarity expresses concentration as moles of solute per liter of solution, while mass percent expresses it as the mass of solute per mass of solution. Molarity is temperature-dependent (because volume changes with temperature), whereas mass percent is not.

What if the component mass is greater than the total mass?

This is physically impossible — the component cannot weigh more than the total mixture. The calculator will show an error in such cases.
