Saving a Million

Getting to that 7-figure savings is quite the achievement. It takes discipline and a successful strategy. Our Millionaire Calculator helps you explore the basics of how to save a million dollars (or any other amount in your preferred currency) by harnessing the power of time and compound interest.

This calculator supports 20 world currencies — including US Dollars, Russian Rubles, Euros, British Pounds, and more — so you can plan your path to becoming a millionaire in any financial system.

How Long to Save a Million? Formulas Used

This millionaire calculator uses two formulas to determine money's future value.

Lump Sum Formula

If you already have initial savings (PV) earning interest at annual rate r, compounded n times per year:

FV = PV × (1 + r/n)^(n×t)

Combined Formula (Initial Savings + Periodic Deposits)

If you also make periodic deposits P at the same compounding frequency:

FV = PV × (1 + r/n)^(n×t) + P × [((1 + r/n)^(n×t) − 1) / (r/n)] × (1 + z × r/n)

Where z = 0 for deposits at end of period (ordinary annuity), z = 1 for deposits at beginning (annuity due).

Solving for Time (t)

t = log((r×FV + P×(n + z×r)) / (r×PV + P×(n + z×r))) / (n × log(1 + r/n))

Solving for Required Deposit (P)

P = (FV − PV × (1 + r/n)^(n×t)) / ([((1 + r/n)^(n×t) − 1) / (r/n)] × (1 + z × r/n))

Sample Calculation

Let's say we want to save $1,000,000 in 10 years. We found a mutual fund with an annual interest rate of 12%, compounded monthly (n = 12). We have an initial investment of $20,000. Deposits are made at end of period (z = 0).

Using the deposit formula:

P = ($1,000,000 − $20,000 × (1.01)^120) / ([(1.01)^120 − 1] / 0.01)
  ≈ $4,060.15 per month

So you would need to deposit approximately $4,060 per month for 10 years to reach $1,000,000.

Using the Millionaire Calculator

Our calculator offers two modes:

  • "How long?" mode — Enter your goal, initial savings, interest rate, and periodic deposit. The calculator tells you when you'll become a millionaire and the exact target date.
  • "How much?" mode — Enter your goal, initial savings, interest rate, and time horizon. The calculator shows exactly how much you need to save each period.

Key Parameters

  • Goal Amount — Your target savings (default: 1,000,000 in your chosen currency)
  • Currency — Choose from 20 world currencies including USD ($), RUB (₽), EUR (€), GBP (£), and more
  • Initial Savings — Money you already have invested
  • Annual Interest Rate — Expected return on investment per year
  • Frequency — How often you deposit and interest is compounded (daily, weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, annually)
  • Deposit Timing — Whether you deposit at the beginning or end of each period

Tips for Reaching Your Goal Faster

  • Start early. Time is your most powerful asset. The earlier you start, the less you need to save each month.
  • Increase frequency. Weekly deposits accumulate faster than monthly ones due to more compounding cycles.
  • Reinvest earnings. Compound interest means your interest earns interest — leave your money in the account.
  • Automate savings. Set up automatic transfers to avoid spending money you intended to save.
  • Increase the rate. Diversified investments typically outperform savings accounts over the long term.
