What is the Mixing Ratio?
When we talk about a mixing ratio, we mean the amount of each substance in a mixture compared to the total amount of the mixture. The amount of a given substance can be expressed as a percentage of the full 100% of a mixture. If there are multiple substances in a mixture, their percentages must add up to 100%.
We can talk about the mixing ratio of volumes, masses, or moles — our mixing ratio calculator allows you to input all of these values using both metric and US customary units.
How to Use the Mixing Ratio Calculator
- Select the unit for your substances (mL, L, fl oz, g, kg, mol, parts, etc.).
- Enter the name and amount for each substance (at least 2 required, up to 5).
- Optionally, enter a scale total to see exactly how much of each substance you need for a specific output quantity.
- Click Calculate to get the mixing ratio, percentages, and proportional bar.
💡 All values entered must use the same unit!
How Do You Calculate the Mixing Ratio?
The mixing ratio formula is straightforward:
Substance % = (Substance Amount ÷ Total Amount) × 100%
Punch Bowl Example
Suppose you need to make punch using the following recipe:
- 100 fl oz of pineapple juice
- 200 fl oz of apple juice
- 50 fl oz of grenadine
Total = 350 fl oz
| Substance | Amount (fl oz) | Percentage | Ratio |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pineapple Juice | 100 | 28.57% | 28.57/100 |
| Apple Juice | 200 | 57.14% | 57.14/100 |
| Grenadine | 50 | 14.29% | 14.29/100 |
The mixing ratio is 100 : 200 : 50 (or simplified: 2 : 4 : 1).
To make 1,000 fl oz of punch, multiply each percentage by 1,000: Pineapple: 285.7 fl oz, Apple: 571.4 fl oz, Grenadine: 142.9 fl oz.
How Do You Mix a 1 to 1 Ratio?
A 1:1 ratio means equal parts of two substances. Simply enter 1 for both amounts. The result will show 50% for each substance. If you want to make 500 mL of the mixture, enter 500 in the "Scale to total" field — you'll need 250 mL of each substance.
Scale Your Recipe with the "Multiply By" Feature
Use the Scale total amount field to find out exactly how much of each substance you need. This is useful for:
- Scaling a recipe up or down
- Finding the precise amounts for a given batch size
- Converting a 5-to-1 ratio into exact volumes or masses
Supported Units
Volume
- Metric: mL (milliliters), L (liters)
- US Customary: fl oz (fluid ounces), cup, pt (pints), qt (quarts), gal (gallons)
Mass
- Metric: g (grams), kg (kilograms)
- US Customary: oz (ounces), lb (pounds)
Moles
- mol (moles), mmol (millimoles)
FAQs
How many substances can I mix?
Our calculator supports up to 5 substances in a single mixture. The first two are required; substances 3–5 are optional.
Do all amounts need to use the same unit?
Yes — all amounts must be in the same unit for the ratio to be meaningful. For example, don't mix grams with milliliters.
What is the difference between mixing ratio and percentage?
A mixing ratio expresses the relative amounts of substances (e.g., 2:3:1), while a percentage expresses each substance as a fraction of 100% of the total mixture. Both representations are shown in our results.
Can I use this as a paint mixing ratio calculator?
Absolutely! Just enter the name and amount of each paint color. The results will show the percentages and ratio needed to reproduce the same shade every time.
