Step-by-Step: How to Calculate Paver Sand

  1. Choose your unit system — US Imperial (feet & inches) or Metric (metres & centimetres).
  2. Enter the dimensions of your paved surface. For a rectangular area simply provide the length and width. For example, a typical parking space measures 8.5 ft × 19.0 ft.
  3. Set the sand depth (thickness of the sand layer). A standard screed layer is 1 inch (2.5 cm). For heavier-duty areas you may use 1.5 in (4 cm).
  4. Optionally enter the sand price per cubic yard (Imperial) or per m³ (Metric) and select your currency to get a cost estimate.

What is the best paver sand?

For creating a sand screed base layer, use sharp (coarse) sand — its angular grains compact well and resist shifting. For filling the joints between pavers, polymeric sand is the best choice: it hardens when wetted and prevents weed growth and ant invasion.

How thick should the paver sand layer be?

The industry standard is 1 inch (2.5 cm) for the bedding layer. Going thinner risks uneven settling; going much thicker can cause instability. After laying pavers, compact the surface with a plate compactor — the sand will compress by about 15–20%, so plan accordingly.

Can paver sand prevent weed growth?

Yes — especially polymeric sand, which is designed for joint filling. Once activated with water it binds into a semi-rigid material that seals gaps, stops weed germination, and resists insect tunnelling. Always follow the manufacturer's activation instructions.

How do I calculate sand for an irregular shape?
