Pizza Comparison Calculator — Which Pizza Is the Best Deal?
Ever wondered whether it's better to buy two medium pizzas or one large pizza? Our Pizza Comparison Calculator answers that question instantly by comparing up to three pizzas side by side — using the only metric that truly matters: price per square inch (or square centimeter).
The Geometry of a Pizza
Pizza comes in circles, and circles follow a simple but powerful rule: the area grows with the square of the radius. This means doubling the diameter of a pizza doesn't double its area — it quadruples it. The formula is:
Area = π × (diameter ÷ 2)²
A 12-inch pizza has an area of about 113 sq in, while a 16-inch pizza has 201 sq in — nearly 78% more pizza for (usually) far less than 78% more money. That's the core insight behind this calculator.
Why Price Per Area Matters
Pizzerias advertise diameter, but you eat area. A lower price per square unit means you're getting more pizza for your money. Our calculator computes this ratio for every pizza you enter and highlights the winner with a trophy (🏆) so you can make the smartest choice at a glance.
A Problem of Scaling
Here's a real-world example: two medium 10-inch pizzas for $8.99 each, or one large 14-inch pizza for $12.99?
- Two mediums: total area = 2 × 78.5 = 157 sq in, total cost = $17.98 → $0.1145/sq in
- One large: area = 153.9 sq in, cost = $12.99 → $0.0844/sq in
The single large pizza wins on price per area — even though the two mediums provide slightly more total pizza!
How to Use the Pizza Comparison Calculator
- Choose your measurement system — Imperial (inches) for US/UK, or Metric (centimeters) for most of the world.
- Select your currency — supports 12 world currencies: USD, EUR, GBP, JPY, RUB, CAD, AUD, BRL, MXN, CHF, INR, CNY.
- Enter Pizza 1 and Pizza 2 — diameter and price are required. You can add an optional name (e.g. "Small", "Large").
- Pizza 3 is optional — add it if you want to compare three sizes at once (e.g. Small vs. Medium vs. XL).
- Click Compare Pizzas — the calculator instantly shows the area, price, and price per square unit for each pizza, highlighting the best value.
FAQs
Which pizza size is usually the best value?
In most pizzerias, the largest pizza offers the best price per square inch due to how area scales with diameter. However, this calculator lets you verify it with actual prices — because deals vary by restaurant and promotion.
Does this work for rectangular or square pizzas?
This calculator is designed for round (circular) pizzas. For rectangular pizzas, you'd simply multiply length × width to get area — no π needed.
Why does the area grow so fast with diameter?
Because area scales with the square of the radius. A pizza that is 50% wider has (1.5)² = 2.25× the area. This "quadratic scaling" is why large pizzas are almost always a better deal per unit of food.
Can I compare two medium pizzas vs. one large?
Yes — simply enter "2 × medium pizza" by doubling the price of one medium and keeping the same diameter. The calculator will still compute the correct price per area ratio.
What currencies are supported?
USD, EUR, GBP, CAD, AUD, JPY, CNY, RUB, BRL, MXN, CHF, and INR. The result table automatically displays the selected currency symbol.
