What is Reconstitution?

Reconstitution is the process of adding a liquid (called a diluent) to a dry ingredient to obtain a solution of a specific concentration. The Reconstitution Formula

The reconstitution calculator is based on one simple relationship between three variables:

Concentration = Dose ÷ Volume of Diluent

Rearranging this equation gives you:

  • Volume of Diluent = Dose ÷ Concentration
  • Dose = Concentration × Volume of Diluent

Concentration is expressed as a ratio of mass to volume — most commonly in mg/mL (milligrams per milliliter), but also in µg/mL, g/L, mg/L, and µg/L.

How to Calculate Reconstitution

Example: Reconstituting an Antibiotic

A vial contains 250 mg of amoxicillin powder. The label instructs you to add 10 mL of water for injection. What is the reconstitution concentration?

Concentration = 250 mg ÷ 10 mL = 25 mg/mL

Now if you need to administer a dose of 125 mg, you would draw up 5 mL of the reconstituted solution.

Calculating Reconstitution of Medication

When working with medications, always check the vial label or package insert for:

  • The total mass of active ingredient in the vial (e.g., 500 mg, 1 g)
  • The recommended volume of diluent to add
