Salary vs. Wage — What's the difference?
The terms salary and wage are often used interchangeably, but they describe different types of payouts.
- A salary is a fixed annual amount paid regularly — usually monthly, bi-weekly, or semi-monthly — regardless of how many hours you work.
- A wage is paid hourly, meaning your earnings depend directly on the number of hours you work in a given period.
✅ Wage earners often receive overtime pay, while salaried employees typically do not unless explicitly stated.
For example:
- A barista or warehouse worker earning $15/hour is paid a wage.
- A marketing specialist earning $60,000/year is salaried.
Types of Salaries in This Hourly-to-Salary Calc
Hourly pay is probably the most popular type of payroll worldwide — however, we'd still love to know what our income will be during a more extended period of time. 📅
Our payroll calculator allows you to calculate the amount of money you earn:
- In a day
- Your daily earnings based on the hourly rate and hours worked per day.
- In a week
- Total earnings for a standard 5-day or custom workweek.
- In a bi-week
- Getting paid every two weeks (bi-weekly payroll is the most common in the US).
- In a semi-month
- Being paid twice a month is not necessarily the same as being paid every two weeks — such a person usually gets paid on the 15th and the last day of the month.
- In a month
- Monthly pay is not typical in the USA, but is pretty popular in Europe. That's why we're not surprised that our monthly income calculator has more of an audience in the Old Continent. 😉
- In a quarter (3 months)
- A quarterly salary breakdown is useful for business planning and financial reporting.
- In a year
- If your salary is your only income source, this option doubles as the gross annual income calculation. (Gross income — when the tax is not yet paid.)
Adjusted or Not Adjusted?
Holiday adjusted pay is pay that excludes all your paid vacation and holidays — this pay is usually lower since it excludes all these days when you weren't working.
- An average American has 7.8 days of holidays per year — that's why we decided to use 8 days as the default value, but don't hesitate to adjust it to your needs!
- An average number of paid vacation days in the US is 15 days — be sure to change it to suit your current situation.
How to Calculate Salary and Gross Annual Income?
Our hourly pay calculator uses some assumptions:
- A typical working year is 260 days (52 weeks × 5 days).
- 260 working days are equal to 52 working weeks.
Example I: $25 an hour is how much a year? (❌ not adjusted for holidays and vacation)
In this case, your hourly pay is $25. You work 25 hours per week for 5 days per week.
| Hours worked in a day | 25h / 5 = 5h |
| Daily pay | 5h × $25 = $125 |
| Yearly pay | $125 × 260 = $32,500 |
| Weekly pay | 25 × $25 = $625 |
| Biweekly pay | $625 × 2 = $1,250 |
| Semi-monthly pay | $32,500 / 24 = $1,354 |
| Monthly pay | $32,500 / 12 = $2,708 |
| Quarterly pay | $32,500 / 4 = $8,125 |
Example II: $15 an hour is how much a year? (✅ adjusted for holidays and vacation)
In this case, your hourly pay is $15. You work 25 hours per week, 5 days per week. We have 10 days of vacation and 10 days of holiday.
💡 The most important part is to adjust the yearly pay; this value will be the basis for all further calculations.
| Hours worked in a day | 25h / 5 = 5h |
| Daily pay (unadjusted) | 5h × $15 = $75 |
| Adjusted yearly pay | $75 × (260 − (10 + 10)) = $75 × 240 = $18,000 |
| Weekly pay (adj.) | $18,000 / 52 = $346 |
| Biweekly pay (adj.) | $346 × 2 = $692 |
| Semi-monthly (adj.) | $18,000 / 24 = $750 |
| Monthly pay (adj.) | $18,000 / 12 = $1,500 |
| Quarterly pay (adj.) | $18,000 / 4 = $4,500 |
Contractor vs. Employee Income — What's the Difference?
When comparing contractor and employee income, remember that the sticker price is rarely the whole story:
- Employees typically receive benefits (health insurance, retirement contributions, paid leave) on top of their salary — these can add 20–40% to the total compensation package.
- Contractors / freelancers usually receive a higher hourly or daily rate, but must cover their own benefits, taxes, equipment, and downtime between projects.
- A contractor earning $40/hr may take home less than an employee earning $35/hr once taxes and benefits are factored in.
Strategies to Boost Your Gross Salary
- Negotiate at hiring — the biggest lever you'll ever have is at the offer stage.
- Ask for annual reviews — inflation erodes real wages; a 3% raise barely keeps pace.
- Develop high-demand skills — certifications, programming, or data skills can command 20–50% premiums.
- Switch jobs strategically — job changers typically earn 10–20% more than those who stay.
- Take on freelance or contract work — even a few extra hours per week at market rates adds up.
- Negotiate benefits as salary — remote work, flexible hours, and extra vacation days have monetary value.
