What is Net Sales? What is Gross Sales?
In short, net sales is the remainder after all sales returns, allowances, and sales discounts have been deducted from the gross sales (also called gross revenue).
A business's sales represent the sum of payments received for selling products or services. But companies do not immediately receive all of their sales in cash — the final amount of received payments may not reflect the invoices sent to customers.
Adjustments, such as sales returns, allowances, and discounts, reduce the gross sales, so the received money is less than the initial sum.
How to Use the Sales Calculator
This calculator is straightforward to use. Enter all the data you know and the result appears instantly:
- Select your unit system — Imperial (each, lb, oz, ft, gal, etc.) or Metric (each, kg, g, m, L, etc.).
- Choose your currency (USD, RUB, EUR, GBP, and 30+ more).
- Enter the number of products sold and select the unit.
- Enter the price per unit.
- Optionally open "Costs to be deducted" to enter sales returns, discounts, and allowances.
You don't have to fill in deductions — if you only care about gross sales, leave them empty. The calculator works in multiple directions.
How to Calculate Net Sales — What is the Net Sales Formula?
Following the definition of net sales, the net sales formula is:
Net Sales = Gross Sales − (Sales Returns + Allowances + Sales Discounts)
Where the gross sales formula is:
Gross Sales = Number of Products Sold × Price per Unit
Sales Returns
In retail, companies often allow customers to return a bought item within a specified period for a full refund. The value of returned goods is deducted from gross sales.
Sales Allowances
An allowance may occur when a buyer negotiates a lower price for revenue already booked — for example, when goods are damaged during transportation or the wrong product was sent. The seller provides a partial refund.
Sales Discounts
A discount may arise when a business wants to improve its cash flow by offering a price reduction to buyers who pay their bills early.
Gross Sales vs. Net Sales
Gross sales are the total of all a business's sale transactions within a given period, before any adjustments.
Net sales are the payments actually received after deducting sales returns, allowances, discounts, and other costs from gross sales.
Costs associated with net sales affect a company's gross profit and gross profit margin. Net sales is usually the total amount of revenue reported by a company on its income statement — all forms of sales and related deductions are combined into one line item.
Example
A producer sells 100 notebooks in a month at $200 each:
- Gross Sales = 100 × $200 = $20,000
- 5 defective machines returned → Sales Returns = 5 × $200 = $1,000
- Sales Discount = $500 (early payment incentive)
- Sales Allowance = $300 (damaged goods partial refund)
- Net Sales = $20,000 − ($1,000 + $500 + $300) = $18,200
