How Much Sand Do I Need?

Our sand calculator is a tool designed specifically to help you estimate the amount of sand required for any construction or landscaping project. Whether you're filling a sandbox, laying a patio base, or preparing a foundation bed, knowing the right quantity prevents both costly over-ordering and frustrating shortfalls.

How to Calculate Sand Volume

The first step is to establish the volume of sand needed. It is equal to the volume of excavation:

  1. Determine the length and width of the cuboidal area. For example, L = 12 ft and W = 3 ft.
  2. Calculate the area: A = 12 × 3 = 36 ft². You can also enter the area directly.
  3. Establish the depth of the sand layer, e.g. d = 6 in (0.5 ft).
  4. Multiply: Volume = 36 × 0.5 = 18 ft³ = 0.667 yd³.

The calculator supports both US Imperial units (feet, inches, cubic yards) and Metric units (meters, centimeters, cubic meters).

How Much Does a Yard of Sand Weigh?

To calculate the weight you simply multiply the volume by the density of the sand type. Common densities:

  • Dry sand: ~1602 kg/m³ (100 lb/ft³) — the most common type for general use
  • Wet sand: ~1922 kg/m³ (120 lb/ft³) — heavier due to water content
  • Dry packed sand: ~1682 kg/m³ (105 lb/ft³) — compacted dry sand
  • Wet packed sand: ~2082 kg/m³ (130 lb/ft³) — fully saturated and compacted
  • Beach sand: ~1529 kg/m³ (95 lb/ft³) — loose coastal sand
  • Masonry sand: ~1442 kg/m³ (90 lb/ft³) — fine sand used in mortar

For example, 1 yd³ of dry sand weighs approximately 2700 lbs (1.35 short tons).

Cost Estimation

Enter the price per unit (per yd³, per short ton, or per lb in Imperial; per m³, per tonne, or per kg in Metric) and select your currency. The calculator supports 16 world currencies including USD, EUR, GBP, CAD, AUD, JPY, BRL, RUB, INR, CNY, and more.

FAQs

How heavy is a bag of sand?

A standard bag of sand weighs between 30–40 kg (66–88 lb). Using a density of 1602 kg/m³ (dry sand), each bag fills approximately 0.025 m³ (0.88 ft³). You can use these figures to estimate how many bags you need from the total volume result.

What if I use concrete?

Sand is a key ingredient in concrete. For concrete mix calculations, visit our Cement Concrete calculators

Can I use this for paver sand?

Yes. Enter the area of your paving project and a depth of 1–2 inches (2.5–5 cm) for the sand bedding layer. Dry sand or masonry sand is typically used under pavers.
