How Much Does a Shower Cost?
Our shower cost calculator is an excellent tool if you've ever wondered: "How many gallons of water does a shower use?" Who doesn't love taking long, hot showers? However, despite being a fantastic way to relax after a long day, a lengthy shower also means using up a tremendous amount of water and energy to heat it — increasing your average water bill.
According to statistics, showers are the third largest use of water in a household, after toilets and washing machines. We believe the first step to limiting water consumption is awareness, and this is exactly what this tool was designed to spread.
How Much Does a 10‑Minute Shower Cost? An Example
Let's test the calculator with a practical example. Suppose you live alone and take a 10‑minute hot shower each day:
- Enter 1 in the "People in household" field.
- Set shower duration to 10 minutes and showers per day to 1.
- Set water price to $3.50 per 1,000 gallons (check your water bill).
- Keep the default flow rate of 2.09 gallons per minute.
- Enter electricity price, e.g., $0.17 per kWh.
Result: a single 10‑minute shower costs about $0.46, or roughly $168 if repeated every day for a full year. Play around with the settings — every change updates the results instantly.
Note: On top of water and energy costs, you may also have to pay for sewage. This tool does not include sewage fees due to varying rates worldwide, so keep that in mind as an additional expense.
American vs. Metric Units
The calculator supports both systems. In Imperial mode water flow is measured in gallons per minute and water price in $ per 1,000 gallons. In Metric mode flow is in liters per minute and price in the chosen currency per cubic meter (m³). Switch between them using the toggle at the top of the form — default values update automatically.
How to Reduce Average Shower Water Consumption
- Lower the shower duration by just one minute and observe the savings.
- Investigate water‑saving shower heads — a 1.5 gal/min head can cut costs nearly in half.
- Consider limiting showers to once per day.
- Brush your teeth at the sink instead of in the shower.
- Collect cold warm‑up water in a bucket and use it to water plants.
FAQs
- What is the average shower flow rate?
- A standard shower head in the US flows at about 2.1 gallons per minute (8 L/min). Low‑flow models go as low as 1.5 gal/min (5.7 L/min).
- How much water does a 10‑minute shower use?
- With a standard head: roughly 20–21 gallons (75–80 liters). A low‑flow head reduces that to about 15 gallons (57 liters).
- Why does the calculator use 25 °C (45 °F) as the temperature rise?
- Cold tap water averages around 10 °C (50 °F). A comfortable shower is about 38–40 °C (100–105 °F). That gives roughly a 25–30 °C rise after accounting for cold‑water mixing at the shower head.
- Which currencies are supported?
- USD, EUR, GBP, CAD, AUD, JPY, CHF, MXN, BRL, INR, CNY, KRW, SEK, NOK, and DKK.
