Spindle Speed Calculator — RPM & Feed Rate for Lathe and Milling Machines
The spindle speed calculator will assist you in determining the appropriate speed and feed rates to perform any lathe or milling operation. These heavy-duty machines are the backbone of the manufacturing industry and are used for material removal processes such as turning, facing, milling, finishing, knurling, grooving, etc.
To perform said operations, they must operate on the right spindle speeds as well as feeding rate to maintain dimensional accuracy of the workpiece and finished product. The article explains what spindle speed is and how to calculate spindle speed and the feed rate. After the example exercise, you'll be able to calculate spindle speed for milling or lathe operations.
What Is Spindle Speed?
The spindle speed is defined as the rotational speed of the spindle of the machine. In lathe or CNC machines, the workpiece is attached to the chuck, which is attached to the spindle. Apart from the lathe, the spindle holds drill bits in the chuck, grinding wheels, and milling or shaping tools. The tool would get regular wear and tear from its interaction with the workpiece during the material removal process. The spindle speed affects the surface finish of the workpiece and also the longevity of the cutting tool.
The spindle speed Ns, in RPM, for a machine operating at cutting speed V is given by the spindle speed formula:
Metric System Formula:
Ns = 1000 × V / (π × D)
where D is the diameter of the workpiece in mm, V is the cutting speed in m/min, and Ns is the spindle speed in RPM.
American (Imperial) System Formula:
Ns = 12 × V / (π × D)
where D is the diameter of the workpiece in inches, V is the cutting speed in ft/min, and Ns is the spindle speed in RPM.
What Is Feed Rate?
The feed rate is defined as the amount of material being fed into the tool in length per unit time. The feed rate calculation formula for a machine having Z teeth is:
Fr = Ns × Ft × Z
where Ft is the feed per tooth (in mm or inches) and Z is the number of teeth (flutes). The result Fr is in mm/min (metric) or in/min (imperial).
How to Calculate Feed Rate and Spindle Speed?
To calculate spindle speed:
- Enter the diameter of the part, D (in mm for Metric, or inches for Imperial).
- Fill in the cutting speed, V (in m/min for Metric, or ft/min for Imperial).
- The spindle speed calculator will return the spindle speed in RPM.
To calculate feed rate:
- Enter the number of teeth (flutes), Z.
- Insert the feed per tooth, Ft (in mm for Metric, or inches for Imperial).
- The spindle speed calculator will return the feed rate.
Example: Using the Spindle Speed Calculator
Find the spindle speed for milling a steel workpiece having a diameter of 20 mm. Take cutting speed V to be 5 m/min. Also, determine the feed rate for a single tooth having feed per tooth of 10 mm.
Step 1 — Calculate Spindle Speed (Metric):
- Diameter D = 20 mm
- Cutting speed V = 5 m/min
- Ns = 1000 × 5 / (π × 20) = 5000 / 62.83 = 79.58 RPM
Step 2 — Calculate Feed Rate:
- Number of teeth Z = 1
- Feed per tooth Ft = 10 mm
- Fr = 79.58 × 0.01 × 1 = 0.7958 m/min
Imperial Example:
For a workpiece with a diameter of 0.787 in (≈20 mm) and a cutting speed of 16.4 ft/min (≈5 m/min):
- Ns = 12 × 16.4 / (π × 0.787) = 196.8 / 2.472 ≈ 79.6 RPM
- With feed per tooth Ft = 0.394 in and Z = 1:
- Fr = 79.6 × 0.394 × 1 ≈ 31.36 in/min

FAQs
How do I define spindle speed?
The number of rotations per minute (RPM) for the spindle is known as the spindle speed. It depends on the cutting speed and the diameter of the tool or workpiece.
What is the difference between spindle speed and cutting speed?
Cutting speed is the surface speed at which the cutting tool or workpiece moves during machining (expressed in m/min or ft/min). Spindle speed is the rotational speed of the machine spindle in RPM. They are related by the formula: Ns = 1000 × V / (π × D) in metric units.
What is feed per tooth?
Feed per tooth (Ft) is the amount of material removed by each cutting edge (tooth or flute) per revolution. It determines the chip thickness and affects surface quality, tool life, and machining efficiency.
What units does this calculator support?
This calculator supports both the Metric system (mm, m/min) and the American Imperial system (inches, ft/min). Select your preferred system at the top of the form.
Does spindle speed affect surface finish?
Yes. Higher spindle speeds generally produce a smoother surface finish but increase heat generation and tool wear. The optimal spindle speed depends on the material, tool material, and desired surface quality.
