How to use the Stride Length Calculator?
Our stride length calculator offers two methods to find your personal stride length:
Method 1: By Height
- Select your sex — males tend to have slightly longer strides than females.
- Choose your unit system — Imperial (feet & inches) or Metric (centimetres).
- Enter your height.
- Click Calculate to see your estimated stride length.
Method 2: By Steps Walked
- Find a clear stretch and measure it — or use any mapping app for accuracy.
- Walk the route and count your steps.
- Enter the distance and the number of steps you took.
- Click Calculate to get your exact stride length.
Optionally enter your body weight to see how many calories you burn per stride.
How do I calculate a stride length?
The stride length formula from measured data is simple:
stride length = distance ÷ number of steps
As your pace increases, your stride length increases too — meaning you cover more ground with each step and complete the same distance in fewer steps.
What is the average stride length?
Average stride length depends on sex and height. Typical values for most adults are:
- Males: ~2.5 ft (0.76 m)
- Females: ~2.2 ft (0.67 m)
The ratio between stride length and height is approximately 0.43:
stride length ≈ height × 0.43
How to measure stride length?
The most accurate method is to walk a measured distance and count your steps:
- Mark a start point A and an end point B with a known distance between them.
- Walk naturally from A to B, counting every step.
- Divide the distance by the step count — that is your stride length.
For a rough estimate without measuring, use the height formula: multiply your height (in metres) by 0.415 (males) or 0.413 (females).
Stride length and calories burned
Each stride burns a small but measurable amount of energy. Using the net metabolic cost of walking (~0.57 kcal per kg per km), the calculator estimates calories per stride based on your body weight. A typical 70 kg person with a 0.76 m stride burns approximately 0.030 kcal per stride — adding up to ~80 kcal per mile.
Imperial & Metric support
The calculator works in both systems:
- Imperial: feet, inches, miles
- Metric: centimetres, metres, kilometres
Results are always shown in both feet and metres so you can compare easily regardless of your preferred system.
FAQs
- Is stride length the same as step length?
- In common usage they are often treated as the same thing. Technically, a step is one foot landing; a stride is two steps (both feet landing once). This calculator uses the common definition: stride = one step.
- Does stride length change with speed?
- Yes. Faster walking or running increases stride length. The height-based formula gives an estimate for normal walking pace.
- How many steps are in a mile?
- For an average male with a 2.5 ft stride, there are approximately 2,112 steps per mile. For an average female with a 2.2 ft stride, approximately 2,400 steps per mile.
- Can I improve my stride length?
- Yes. Strength training, flexibility work (especially hip flexors), and running-specific drills can all help increase stride length and running efficiency.
