Formulas behind the tablecloth size calculator

The calculator uses the following formulas depending on table shape:

Rectangular tablecloth (oblong tablecloth)

We assume the drop is the same on each side:

length = table_length + drop × 2
width  = table_width  + drop × 2

Square tablecloth

Since all sides are equal, only one formula is needed:

side = table_side + drop × 2

Round tablecloth

Add the drop to both ends of the diameter:

diameter = table_diameter + drop × 2

Oval tablecloth

Treated the same as a rectangular tablecloth:

length = table_length + drop × 2
width  = table_width  + drop × 2

Booth tablecloth

Because one side of the table is against the wall, no drop is needed there:

length = table_length + drop
width  = table_width  + drop × 2

Don't forget to secure the tablecloth on the wall side to prevent it from sliding.

Conference / wedding tablecloth

The sitting side uses a short or medium drop for comfortable seating; the other three sides have a full floor-length drop for a formal look:

length = table_length + table_height × 2
width  = table_width  + sitting_drop + table_height

Tablecloth runner

A runner is a narrow strip placed along the centre of the table — great for decoration or protecting the surface:

runner_length = table_length + drop × 2

If you want the runner to stay entirely on the table surface without hanging, enter a negative drop value (e.g. −5 in).

How much drop should a tablecloth have?

The ideal drop depends on the occasion:

• Short drop (6–8 in / 15–20 cm) — Casual, everyday use.
• Half drop (14–16 in / 35–40 cm) — Formal dinners and special occasions.
• Full floor-length drop (~30 in / 76 cm) — Weddings, banquets, and conferences.
• Puddle drop (> floor length) — Decorative use; the amount depends on the fabric and the effect you want.

The minimum practical drop is around 2 in (5 cm); anything smaller and the fabric won't hang or drape properly.

What size tablecloth for a 6-foot table? An example

A standard 6-foot (72-inch) banquet table is typically 72 in × 30 in. For a casual gathering with a 6-inch drop:

• Tablecloth width = 30 + 6 × 2 = 42 in

For a formal event with a 14-inch drop you would need an 100 in × 58 in tablecloth.
