What Is Time Duration?
Time duration is the amount of time that passes between a start point and an end point. Whether you're tracking how long a meeting lasted, calculating the time between two clock times, or measuring elapsed time in sports or science, understanding time duration is an everyday skill. Our Time Duration Calculator makes it simple to get exact results in hours, minutes, and seconds.
How to Use the Clock Time Calculator
The Clock Time mode calculates the duration between two specific times of day — for example, from 8:13 AM to 4:55 PM.
- Select Clock Time mode (selected by default)
- Choose your time format: 24-hour (e.g., 16:55) or 12-hour AM/PM (e.g., 4:55 PM)
- Enter the Start Time — hours, minutes, and seconds
- Enter the End Time — hours, minutes, and seconds
- Click Calculate Duration
If the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator automatically assumes the end time is the next day (midnight crossing) and notes this in the results.
How to Use the Elapsed Time Calculator
The Elapsed Time mode is useful when you have two elapsed time values — for example, a stopwatch reading of 1:30:00 to 3:45:00.
- Select Elapsed Time mode
- Enter the Start Elapsed Time in hours, minutes, and seconds
- Enter the End Elapsed Time — must be equal to or greater than the start time
- Click Calculate Duration
How to Calculate Time Duration Manually
To find the time between 8:13 AM and 4:55 PM manually:
- Convert both times to seconds from midnight:
- 8:13 AM = 8 × 3600 + 13 × 60 = 29,580 seconds
- 4:55 PM = 16 × 3600 + 55 × 60 = 57,300 seconds
- Subtract: 57,300 − 29,580 = 27,720 seconds
- Convert to hours and minutes: 27,720 ÷ 3600 = 7 hours 42 minutes
This is exactly what our calculator does automatically — with support for seconds precision, midnight crossing, and both 12-hour and 24-hour formats.
Understanding the Results
- Duration (H:MM:SS) — the total duration expressed as hours, minutes, and seconds
- Total Hours — the duration expressed as a decimal number of hours (e.g., 7.7 hours)
- Total Minutes — the duration expressed as total minutes (e.g., 462 minutes)
- Total Seconds — the raw total in seconds (e.g., 27,720 seconds)
Midnight Crossing
When the end time is earlier than the start time in clock mode (for example, start at 10:00 PM and end at 2:00 AM), the calculator assumes the end time is on the following day. This handles overnight shifts, late-night events, and similar scenarios correctly.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many seconds are in an hour?
There are 3,600 seconds in one hour (60 minutes × 60 seconds).
How do I calculate the duration between two times?
Subtract the start time from the end time. If both are clock times, convert them to total seconds first, subtract, then convert back to hours, minutes, and seconds. Our calculator handles all of this automatically.
What is the difference between clock time and elapsed time?
Clock time refers to a specific point in the day (e.g., 3:45 PM). Elapsed time refers to a duration that has passed (e.g., 1 hour 30 minutes into a race). The calculator supports both use cases.
Can I calculate time that crosses midnight?
Yes. In Clock Time mode, if the end time is earlier than the start time (e.g., start at 11:00 PM, end at 1:00 AM), the calculator automatically adds 24 hours and notes that the duration spans midnight.
What is the difference between 12-hour and 24-hour format?
In 12-hour format, times run from 12:00 AM (midnight) to 11:59 PM, using AM and PM designators. In 24-hour format (military time), times run from 0:00 to 23:59 without AM/PM. For example, 4:55 PM in 12-hour format is 16:55 in 24-hour format.
How do I convert hours and minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60 and add to the hours. For example, 7 hours 42 minutes = 7 + (42 ÷ 60) = 7.7 hours. The calculator shows this automatically in the breakdown.
