How Does the Total Body Water Calculator Work?

This total body water calculator uses your age, height, weight, and sex to estimate the volume of water in your body. It is based on the Watson formula developed by Dr. P.E. Watson and his team, described in 1980 in the article Total body water volumes for adult males and females estimated from simple anthropometric measurements.

Watson Formula

The calculator uses Dr. P.E. Watson's validated formulas:

  • For males: TBW (L) = 2.447 − 0.09156 × age (years) + 0.1074 × height (cm) + 0.3362 × weight (kg)
  • For females: TBW (L) = −2.097 + 0.1069 × height (cm) + 0.2466 × weight (kg)

These equations calculate total body water for adults of any age in liters. Both metric (kg, cm) and American (lbs, ft/in) measurement systems are supported.

Why Is Total Body Water Calculated from Body Weight, Height, Age, and Sex?

A rough estimate can be made using average percentages — approximately 60% for adult males and 50% for adult females. However, these averages do not account for individual variation. Body water depends on:

  • Body composition — muscle tissue holds more water than fat tissue
  • Height and frame — taller individuals have more lean mass and therefore more water
  • Age — body water percentage decreases with age as lean mass is replaced by fat
  • Sex — males typically have higher muscle mass and thus higher body water percentage

Compared to several other advanced methods, the Watson formula gave the best overall results in research validation studies.

How to Interpret the Calculated Body Water Percentage

The normal total body water range is:

  • Males: 58 ± 8% (range: 50–66%)
  • Females: 48 ± 6% (range: 42–54%)

Body Water Compartments

The total body water is distributed across several compartments:

  • Intracellular fluid (ICF) — approximately 2/3 of total body water; the fluid contained within cells. This is where most biochemical reactions occur.
  • Extracellular fluid (ECF) — approximately 1/3 of total body water; the fluid in areas outside cells, consisting of:
    • Plasma (1/5 of ECF) — the liquid component of blood, essential for nutrient and hormone transport
    • Interstitial fluid (4/5 of ECF) — fluid surrounding cells in tissues, providing the medium for nutrient delivery and waste removal
    • Transcellular fluid (the "third space," normally ignored in calculations) — fluid inside organs such as gastrointestinal, cerebrospinal, peritoneal, and ocular fluids

For an average adult male (70 kg, 175 cm, age 30), the calculator estimates approximately 42–45 liters of total body water, representing about 60% of body weight. For an average adult female (60 kg, 165 cm, age 30), this is approximately 30–33 liters, representing about 50–55% of body weight. What does it mean if my body water percentage is low?

A percentage below the normal range may indicate:

  • Higher proportion of body fat (which contains less water than muscle)
  • Older age with naturally reduced lean mass
  • Possible chronic dehydration (though the Watson formula estimates total body water regardless of hydration status)

What does it mean if my body water percentage is high?

A percentage above the normal range typically indicates a higher lean body mass and muscle development, which is common in athletes and physically active individuals.

Does this calculator measure hydration?

No. The Watson formula estimates total body water volume based on body composition — not your current hydration level. It reflects structural body water, not whether you are dehydrated on a given day. For hydration assessment, clinical methods like bioelectrical impedance or plasma osmolality are used.

Is the formula accurate for children or elderly individuals?

The Watson formula was developed and validated for adults. For pediatric assessment or elderly patients with significantly altered body composition, specialized formulas or clinical measurement methods are more appropriate.
