What is Volume?
Volume is the amount of three-dimensional space that an object or substance occupies. Generally, the volume of a container is understood as its capacity — not the amount of space the container itself displaces. The SI unit for volume is the cubic meter (m³). In everyday life, liters and milliliters are more commonly used for liquids, while cubic inches and gallons dominate in the US system.
Volume Units and Conversion
Two main measurement systems are used around the world for volume:
Metric Units
- Cubic millimeter (mm³)
- Cubic centimeter (cm³) — equal to 1 milliliter (mL)
- Liter (L) — 1,000 cm³
- Cubic meter (m³) — 1,000,000 cm³
US / Imperial Units
- Cubic inch (in³) — 16.387 cm³
- US fluid ounce (fl oz) — 29.574 cm³
- Cup — 8 fl oz = 236.588 cm³
- Pint (pt) — 2 cups = 473.176 cm³
- Quart (qt) — 2 pints = 946.353 cm³
- US gallon (gal) — 4 quarts = 3,785.41 cm³
- Cubic foot (ft³) — 1,728 in³ = 28,316.85 cm³
Volume Formulas for 3D Shapes
This calculator supports five of the most common three-dimensional solids:
| Shape | Formula | Variables |
|---|---|---|
| Cube | V = s³ | s = side length |
| Sphere | V = (4/3)πr³ | r = radius |
| Cylinder | V = πr²h | r = radius, h = height |
| Cone | V = (1/3)πr²h | r = base radius, h = height |
| Rectangular Prism (Box) | V = l × w × h | l = length, w = width, h = height |
How to Use the Volume Calculator
- Select a shape from the dropdown (Cube, Sphere, Cylinder, Cone, or Rectangular Prism).
- Choose your measurement system — Metric (centimeters) or US/Imperial (inches).
- Enter the dimensions for your chosen shape.
- Click Calculate Volume to instantly see results in all units: cm³, mL, L, m³, in³, fl oz, cups, pints, quarts, and gallons.
Measuring Volume: Solids, Liquids, and Gases
Solids
For regularly shaped solids (cubes, spheres, cylinders, etc.), volume is calculated directly from the geometric formula. For irregular objects, the water displacement method is practical: submerge the object in a graduated container and measure the rise in water level.
Liquids
Liquids take the shape of their container. They are measured using graduated cylinders, measuring cups, or by weight together with the known density of the liquid. The common equivalence: 1 mL of water = 1 cm³ = 1 gram (at 4 °C).
Gases
Gas volume depends on pressure and temperature (ideal gas law: PV = nRT). At standard conditions (0 °C, 1 atm), 1 mole of an ideal gas occupies 22.414 liters.
Volume vs. Area: Rectangle vs. Box
A common source of confusion is asking for the "volume of a rectangle." A rectangle is a
two-dimensional figure — it has area (length × width) but no volume.
The three-dimensional equivalent is a rectangular prism (box), which does have volume:
V = l × w × h. A swimming pool or a shoebox are good real-life examples.
Real-Life Applications
- Construction & Engineering — calculating concrete or soil volumes for foundations
- Cooking & Baking — converting recipe volumes between metric and US cups/fl oz
- Shipping & Packaging — determining box capacity for freight calculations
- Science & Chemistry — measuring reagent volumes and reaction vessel capacities
- Aquariums & Pools — calculating water capacity in gallons or liters
- Fuel & Liquid Storage — tank capacity in gallons, quarts, or liters
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is the difference between volume and capacity?
Volume refers to the total space an object occupies, while capacity typically refers to the amount a container can hold. They are measured in the same units but applied differently.
How do I convert cubic inches to gallons?
Divide cubic inches by 231 to get US gallons. Example: 462 in³ ÷ 231 = 2 gallons.
How many cups are in a gallon?
There are 16 cups in 1 US gallon.
How many liters are in a gallon?
1 US gallon = 3.785 liters. 1 UK (imperial) gallon = 4.546 liters.
What is the volume of a standard Olympic swimming pool?
An Olympic swimming pool is 50 m × 25 m × 2 m = 2,500 m³, which equals 2,500,000 liters or about 660,000 US gallons.
Can I use this calculator for US imperial gallons?
Yes. Select US/Imperial (inches) as the measurement system, enter your dimensions in inches, and the result will include US gallons (and all other imperial and metric units) automatically.
