The Physics of Hot and Cold Beverages

Heat is the transfer of thermal energy between two bodies at different temperatures. When you pour boiling water into a mug, the water starts losing heat to the surrounding air, to the mug walls, and through evaporation. The warmer the water relative to the environment, the faster this heat loss occurs — and that is the core idea behind Newton's Law of Cooling.

The governing formula for natural cooling is:

T(t) = Tenv + (T0 − Tenv) × e−k·t

Where:

  • T(t) — temperature of the water at time t (minutes)
  • T0 — initial (starting) temperature
  • Tenv — ambient (room) temperature
  • k — cooling constant (depends on container type, surface area, and environment)
  • e — Euler's number (~2.718)

Solving for time t: t = −ln((Ttarget − Tenv) / (T0 − Tenv)) / k

The cooling constant k varies by container. A thin paper cup loses heat fastest (k ≈ 0.015 min⁻¹), while an insulated thermos retains heat much longer (k ≈ 0.002 min⁻¹).

Cooling Water to Any Temperature: Three Methods

Method 1: Patience (Natural Cooling)

Simply wait. The calculator tells you exactly how many minutes (and seconds) it will take for your water to cool naturally in its container. A typical mug of boiling water takes about 10–15 minutes to cool to a comfortable tea-drinking temperature of 70°C (158°F) at room temperature.

Method 2: Mixing Cold and Hot Water

Add cold water to instantly bring the temperature down. The formula is based on conservation of energy (calorimetry):

Tmix = (Vhot × Thot + Vcold × Tcold) / (Vhot + Vcold)

Rearranging to find how much cold water to add:

Vcold = Vhot × (Thot − Ttarget) / (Ttarget − Tcold)

Method 3: Repeated Transfers (Pouring Between Containers)
